4.0 out of 5 stars A departure from their previous style., 19 Jan 2002
By cdelamere@ntlworld.com (Reading, England) - See all my reviews
In contrast to their previous album 'Liar' guitarist Duane Denison has introduced a sophisticated blues element. Punk still remains a prominant theme but enigmatic blues solos give this album a brilliantly unsettling feel, particularly notable in songs such as 'The Associate' and 'Elegy'.
Legendary producer and current Shellac frontman, Steve Albini has given this album his unmistakable trademark. The percussion element has been tweaked to perfection sometimes drawing to comparison with the likes of Nirvana's 'In Utero' and the Pixies 'Surfer Rosa'.
The vocals have taken a slightly dissapointing back seat here. Frontman David Yow mumbles indecipherably, drowened by the guitar. His pitiful yelping and anxious crooning are precious on this album.
For first time listeners of the band this album would perhaps not be the best introduction. Albums such as 'Shot' and 'Goat' are more instantly striking. For those with a matured appreciation of the band, this album is brilliant.
