As a teenager, Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon dreamed of working with his heroes, except his weren’t the typical heroes for a kid growing up in the Midwest during the 1990s. When his friends were getting into punk and hip-hop, the seventeen-year-old Vernon was obsessed with gospel music. As teenagers, he and his best friend—and future band mate—Phil Cook steeped themselves in ... Read more in Amazon's Blind Boys of Alabama Store

4.0 out of 5 stars Soulful Saga 10 Aug 2008
Format:Audio CD
A group of blind black boys originally came together as the Happyland Singers for some 10 years, and then for almost 60 further years became The Bind Boys of Alabama and have been continuously singing spiritual and gospel music ever since. Over the years society has changed from the days of segregated audiences within the USA to where it now embraces everyone, and all over the world. The Blind Boys of Alabama played a number of times in New Orleans but never recorded there until production of this CD in support of hurricane victims.

CD tracks feature a wide repertoire with traditional numbers plus songs associated with famous singers including Mahalia Jackson and Jim Reeves, but with unmistakeable gospel harmony and influences of rhythm & blues - and of course being in New Orleans - of jazz. My favourite tracks include `Across the Bridge', `Down by the Riverside' and `Uncloudy Day' where these are supported by The Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Other tracks are backed by a trio of piano, bass and drums alternating with guest Allen Toussaint on piano, or The Hot 8 Brass Band with especially Carl LeBlanc on banjo and Bennie Pete on tuba. From the opening track `Free at Last' using Dr. Martin Luther King's famous speech, to the final number `I'll Fly away' as a form of funeral jazz with The Hot 8 this is a great historical CD. It is testament to the tradition of black music inspired by religion. However advancing years mark performances somewhat rough and rustic leading to 4-star rather than 5-star rating.

Having first come across this group on one the Jools Holland `and friends' albums, I fell in love with their distinctive sound and determined to hear more of their music.

The group have an incredibly long history, stretching back to the late thirties. Because they have so much experience and are so used to working together they are capable of producing simply sublime close harmony gospel with a streak of soul and the roots of rock. You can just feel their faith as they pour their hearts and souls into the songs, to produce some of the most classic gospel ever committed to tape. They have an absolute joy at making music that is totally infectious and will leave you feeling uplifted.

Going right back to the birth of soul and rhythm and blues, this is a classic album from a class act.

At the time of writing Amazon has no track listing, so here it is:

1 - Free at last
2 - Make a better world
3 - How I got over
4 - You got to move
5 - Across the bridge
6 - You better mind
7 - Down by the riverside
8 - If I could help somebody
9 - Uncloudy day
10 - A prayer
11 - I've got a home
12 - I'll fly away

4.0 out of 5 stars The Gospel according to the Blind Boys.... 6 Nov 2011
Format:Audio CD
An entertaining gospel album that incorporates elements of restrained Little Feat funk and old New Orleans jazz. Yes it's soulful and throughout there is a gritty intensity in the performances that tell you this group hold their faith dear, so expect to be singing along and tapping your feet whilst this disc in the player, it's that sort of involving listen. Tracks like 'If I Could Help Somebody' and 'I've Got a Home' really hit home in the way that would make Ray Charles proud. The production is first rate, the backing musicians are unobtrusive but when asked to contribute lift this disc further and the singing - if a little gravely and wavering in the upper registers is full of character and commitment. An enjoyable and up-lifting-a disc worthy of a warm recommendation.

Tremendous blend of gospel, blues and jazz worth a place in any collection. If you like Ray Charles then I'd suggest you'd like the sound of this album.

Formed 70 years ago with only Jimmy Carter remaining from the original group, these guys continue to provide joyfull uplifting music. This Soul/Gospel/Jazz influenced collection is helped along by being recorded in The Big Easy with assistance from Allen Toussaint,Hot 8 Brass Band ,the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and a hot rhythm section.
Any one who enjoys good music will enjoy this recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars Down In New Orleans with The Blind Boys of Alabama 30 Jan 2008
By Patrick Davis - Published on Amazon.com

With some amazing New Orleans musicians (even Allen Toussaint!) the Blind Boys of Alabama create one of their BEST albums yet. My favorite song on the album is "How I Got Over", the soulful vocals and bluesy music feels like a sunday morning gospel and blues concert. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Their best work yet! 5 Feb 2008
By John Schrader - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This HAS to be The Blind Boys of Alabama's best work yet! The album is full of amazing talent, including the Hot 8 Brass Band, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band and even Allen Toussaint. My favorite song is "Free At Last," which I just saw them do on Conan O'Brien last week. If you're looking for a Blind Boys' record to buy this is the one - you won't be disappointed, I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A record as good as its cover 1 May 2008
By JRadz - Published on Amazon.com

Had to give a shoutout to the great cover art, which looks like a weathered sign, and matches the rugged red clay harmonies on the record. Backed by the best musicians you'll hear anywhere (as a keyboard player, I would sell my soul to the devil for Allen Toussaint's skills), the Blind Boys deliver a powerful gospel record. I had initially feared that the record would consist of overly-familiar songs and arrangements, but everything here sounds fresh, even "Down by the Riverside." Their version of Toussaint's "Make a better world" is a highlight.

5.0 out of 5 stars GOTTA GET IT! 19 Jun 2009
By The Cole Family - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Being from South Louisiana and spending a LOT of time in New Orleans, there is no way to avoid that New Orleans sound becoming a part of you. I've longed for some music that would catch the upbeat, unmistakeable sound of this area...while still being something I can listen to and sing along with as a Christian. This is perfect! It is so wonderful to dance and sing aloud to the Lord... all the while feeling so at home with those familiar sounds. KUDOS to the Blind Boys...they did it again!
