4 of 4 people found the following review helpful By G. E. Harrison TOP 500 REVIEWER on 7 Mar. 2013
Format: Audio CD
Bobby Rush's new album was produced by Paul Brown, keyboard player in Bobby's band, and was recorded at Ocean Soul Studios, Nashville. From the opening title track the album really swings and it's hard to believe that Bobby is 77 - his voice sounds much younger and most tracks are built around his guitar and vocals, with his harp also prominent on some tracks. The album features what Bobby has always done, blues-based southern soul and funk honed to perfection after years working the chitlin circuit and was recorded with a stripped down band - no backing singers or brass - although there are also elements of cajun and reggae. The songs are basic, down-home and slightly familiar (although "Raining in my heart" isn't the Slim Harpo song) and Bobby is probably the most popular blues singer amongst black audiences in the South. This a well-produced, good-sounding record with a nice selection of songs including a recession blues "Tight money", the funky "Rock this house" but I'd have to go with the cajun-influenced "Down in Louisiana" with its modern production tweaks as my favourite track.
