Product Description

The bustle and banter of London's iconic Billingsgate fish market provided the backdrop for Reg Varney's first sitcom following his phenomenal success in On the Buses. In the mid-Seventies, Billingsgate was Europe's premier fish market: a muddle of boxes and barrows, merchants and white-smocked porters with their fish boxes perched precariously on their heads. East Ender Varney plays porter Reg Furnell, whose misadventures Down the 'Gate and beyond were charted over two series in the mid 1970s.

Although twelve episodes were made the only copies now known to exist are six episodes from series two that Reg Varney himself recorded off-air in 1976. Though viewers will notice a drop in picture quality compared to our normal DVD releases from this period, they are the only copies in existence.

Special Features:

[] Script PDFs for all twelve episodes

3.0 out of 5 stars A note onthe quality 4 Dec 2013
By P. D. gray TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
I have to agree with the previous reviewer that this release is remarkable in so much as the source material is in such bad condition BUT I dont really know how NETWORK could have enhanced it to be honest....perhaps by putting subtitles on which would be useful when the sound drops. Personally I applaud their decision to defy convention and release it, no other company would....probably due to them being scared of many complaints/returned dvds, and its to their credit we get the chance to see Reg in his post-buses years, still a joy to watch. A word of thanks to Reg (up on his cloud in the sky) for recording half a dozen of the shows himself, why on earth did ATV destroy their tapes??? I thought only the BBC were stupid enough to do such things.

4.0 out of 5 stars quite nostalgic 20 Feb 2014
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I did not remember this, but I do like reg varney, the quality as quite watchable, however the quality is like watching an old video tape, bit of flashing to the top of the screen few lines and a bit of sound issues. but as this has been taken from a personal video copy from reg varney's own collection, it can be a bit distracting at first but you do get used to it. On the whole though I have watched worse quality.
The content is exactly what you'd expect from reg varney and there is an array of comedy actors to look out for and exactly what you'd expect from a 1976 sitcom . not quite as good as on the buses but certainly one for the collection.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bad Quality Recording 26 Aug 2013
Format:DVD
This recording came from Reg Varneys own personal video recoding
Its the only copy in exsitence after they were wiped years ago
I know he only taped it from the tele on a average domestic machine back in 1976
But...

I`m sure the company who released this could have had it `cleaned up` or digitally enhanced or whatever..
Looks like its been burnt straight from the video with an old scart lead
I could have done it better myself
I also have a bootleg copy bought years ago that is of equal quality if not better

Full of suspect picture rolling, loss of colour and bad sound quality spoil this.

Having said that its great to have it released :)

1.0 out of 5 stars great programme terrible quality 28 Dec 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This is a shame that the quality of the dvd is absolutely appalling .The picture has a rainbow of colours in a straight horizontal line above the picture and a wavy line like the old video players had as if its trying to track a picture. The sound is in and then it goes completely away. I love and buy a lot of dvds of the classics but not being able to watch it I really cant understand how the dvd producers think people aren't going to complain. Its not amazons fault in this as there are only the distributors of this but avoid as the quality is terrible
