I have owned this album since it first came out (on lovely vinyl of course) and although I have long since transferred this to CD myself, I was intrigued by this new release, so I bought it. The standard tracks are all there on disc 1 with a couple of extras, and they still sound incredibly fresh - hard to believe that so much of the great music I was lucky enough to grow up with is so old now.

Disc 2 is very interesting and unlike at least one other reviewer, I shall certainly be playing it again. To a non-musician like me, it is fascinating to hear the tracks without the vocals, both to see just how much the vocals contribute to the overall sound and melody, and also to hear all the subtle background bits that you don't/can't hear when the vocals are there. But I agree about the All Night Long Cozy Powell mix track - unlike the rest, it doesn't sound like an interesting alternate remix, it just sounds a bit of a mess.

Overall, well worth buying even if you have the original album already.

And the onions? Well, back where I worked when this came out (1979/80?), we used to regularly frequent a nearby pub for lunch, and on the jukebox there (remember those?), Since You've Been Gone was far and away the most popular track, it was played ALL the time. The pub served the most delicious steak and onion rolls, and whenever I hear this track now, I am instantly transported back to that pub, sat with a great bunch of friends and munching one of those rolls. Happy Days.

This was probably the first proper 'rock' album I bought way back in 1979. It was a big step for me as Id been used to listening to stuff like Genesis, Yes and stuff. At the time (I was still quite young, mind) it blew my socks off and made me want to grow my air long, play loud guitars and misbehave a lot. Trouble was, I listened to it so much that I ended up tiring of it pretty quickly and discovered other bands I preferred like UFO, Iron Maiden and all the NWOBHM that was going at the time - so I probably havent heard this in its entirety since the early 80s. So, where am I going with all this? Yes, bought this as a download last month and stuck it on in the car for nostalgic reasons more than anything and got the shock of my life - it's still good! As this was only my introduction to Rainbow I found later I prefferred the Dio albums, but this is a more earthy, more blues based album that the three with the wee man, and probably because of that it hasnt really dated as much as the others. The singles, All night Long and Since you been gone still sound fresh (SYBG maybe less so, as it seems to be included in all the soft rock compilation cds over the past 30 years or so), Eyes of the World, Lost in Hollywood and Danger Zone are still fairly big rock pieces and No time to lose is still an absolute belter of a song. Makin Love is a bit of a whimper, but you cant have it all I suppose. The playing is excellent and fresh sounding, especially Cozy Powells drums and Bonnetts voice - Roger Glovers production is also noticably crisp and tight - one of those rare albums where everyone gets a good sound. In all, I was well happy to revisit such a landmark album of my plooky youth and find it was still a great piece of music.Read more ›

this was the second album i ever bought way back in 1980 and still amazing after all these years and now with extras .Other reviews of the original release and re-issues say it all about this absolute rock classic so read them first and listen to history one more time . Disc 2 is classed as a work in progress , the tracks that become the masterpieces on disc 1 and in doing so you can dig the master at work as Mr Blackmore changes and refines his work . The sound is fantastic despite what some reviews may say as you have to read the booklet!!!!!!! to get the theme . Disc 2 shows Cozy and Ritchie at their best and for one who experienced all the Rainbow line ups this album with Bonnett /Carey/Glover remains a masterpiece . I can only hope that the reissue of Rising is as rewarding. Any "new" works by the minstral in his rock persona will always be welcomed.long live rock and roll!!!

Well no actually, this is a fabulous album which has suffered from years of abuse and unfair reviews,of course we all would have loved Ronnie to remain but thats life, back in the day the hysteria surrounding Bonnets appearance was incredible most people overlooked the fact that he could actually sing!

This album saw Ritchie pursue a more commercial approach and unfortunately most people only remember it for the 2 hit singles 'Since You've Been Gone' and 'All Night Long',two excellent slices of pop/rock which pretty much set the template for many a 'heavy' band to copy over the next few years.

However that does a dis service to the many quality tracks found on the disc, classics such as 'Eyes of the World' with its brooding intro and stunning guitar, the dynamic 'Lost in Hollywood' with Cozy battering seven shades of s**t out of his drums, the superb 'Makin Love' with lashings of Blackmore soloing which just make you smile,as for the rest classic heavy rock with 'Love's No Friend' the pick of the bunch, stunning music by a superb band, another seemless updating of the band with Bonnet performing at the top of his game ably supported by newbies Glover and Airey,of course Ritchie being Mr Picky would change the line up again, but thats another story.
