Book Description

25 May 2011
As the husband of a family doctor, Andrew always thought having a baby would be problem-free - like helping a kitchen installer install a kitchen. Unfortunately, as he and his wife soon discovered, babies don't always read the textbooks.

Plunged into a mysterious world of baby snot-suckers and nipple tweaking, off-the-scale blood tests and impromptu bodily leaks, they faced the usual concerns - How will we afford it? And will we ever sleep again? But they also met with some unexpected questions: Can babies really suffer 'cold crack trauma' from unwarmed wet wipes? What do you do when their favourite teddy goes walkabout? And how do you escape a breastfeeding teacher armed with a hand pump determined to prove she can milk a man?

This is a story about the most turbulent time in any couple's life. It's for every woman wondering what their partner s really thinking, and for every man wanting reassurance but unsure who to ask. It's for every mum who s torn herself up about returning to work, and for every dad wondering what s the point of her breasts growing if he's not allowed to touch them.

Warm, honest and funny, this is the book for every new parent who suspects that the reference books just can t tell you everything.

I've finished reading this within two days of receiving it and that's saying something as I have an 8 month old baby to care for all day and night! Andrew writes from the heart and gives a lovely honest account of his feelings as baby Polly grew, was born and developed up to her first Birthday. He doesn't tell you what you should or shouldn't do as every parent makes a different set of choices so it's a relief from many other baby parenting books. I'll be recommending this to a first time dad to be I know as it's relaxed, funny and heart-warming but speaking as a first time mum I enjoyed hearing the dad's side of the story for a change too. Hope he writes a second one about baby number two they are planning at end of this one!

Just brilliant - well done Andrew. I LOVED reading it. I laughed out loud throughout it, it was informative and brilliantly written. It just made me want to get on with having a baby even more. A must read for all first time parents, although anyone can read it and would enjoy it tremendously. Can't wait for your next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic insight 4 Aug 2011
Format:Paperback
Fantastic book for both first time parents and for those who have been there, done that. It is for those who worry if they are doing the right thing with their children and for those who worry what their other half are thinking, without being patronising and dictatorial. Andrew writes with fluency and honesty. Agree with one of the other reviewers, I hope he brings out a follow up for coping with two children!
