Book Description

15 Mar 2012 English Heritage Red Guides
Dover Castle's location, commanding the shortest sea crossing between England and the Continent, has given it immense strategic importance. The chalk of Castle Hill has been shaped and reshaped over the centuries into massive earthworks, ditches and mounds. Imposing walls and towers have been raised and networks of tunnels built beneath them. Henry II began the building of the present castle in the 1180s, and over the next 800 years its buildings and defences were adapted to meet the changing demands of weapons and warfare. This guidebook, packed with historic images, reconstructions and plans, provides a full tour of this iconic castle and relates its long and eventful history.

One of the latest English Heritage historical site guides, this packs a lot of information and great illustrations (photos and diagrams, most in color) into a fairly compact package. I've been to Dover Castle twice (thus far) and always bought the then-current guide. This new edition puts its predecessors in the shade thanks both to new information (such as the new exhibit in the keep) and vastly improved quality printing and illustrations. All of these "red" guides (so dubbed for the stripe along the binding edge) are worth having as a record of what you saw--or still hope to see. On my next trip, I want to see the extensive coastal tunnels which were not yet open on my last visit (there's a red guide for those, too). In all, this is a fine history and description of one of England's most important castles.
