During a recent trip to Portugal, my wife and I made an overnight visit to Porto. On the second day, we planned to take a Douro River cruise. As a result, when we visited Porto's famous bookstore, Livraria Lello, on our first day in Porto, I was on the lookout for a book that would give some good basic information about the Douro River Valley and what we might be seeing during our cruise.
The bookstore had this book for sale in many different languages, and I'm glad I bought it. For the first couple hours of our cruise, the weather was cold and foggy, so we spent that time reading the book, and found it very informative and fun. It was fascinating to learn that the Marquis de Pombal, the same person who helped Lisbon re-build after the disastrous 1755 earthquake, also was responsible for setting aside the region as a protected wine-growing area. And we loved the many colorful photos that fill the book.
