Dougie Campbell is a Scottish soldier, a veteran of Afghanistan returning home to the south side of Glasgow. He has just left the British Army but cannot forget his experiences of combat. Dougies War is a new graphic novel by acclaimed novelist and biographer Rodge Glass and artist Dave Turbitt about the legacy of the war in the Middle East and the effects of Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome on returning veterans. A fictional story, but based on meticulously researched real life experiences of Scottish veterans, Dougies War shows that the fight doesn t end when men and women leave military service. Dougie s War is inspired by the classic and highly influential 80s World War 1 comic strip Charleys War, the first to explore the reality of war and what was then called shell shock. Okay, so it's not the cheeriest of subject areas but the combo of Glass's story with the fantastic artwork make this a very worthwhile read - and despite never having been in a war, I could feel Dougie's frustration and anxiety. The section on Charley's War is also interesting. My only criticism is its length - I felt Dougie's War could've been longer, especially considering the book's price. I'd like to see more of this type of literature published...

Dougie Campbell has just returned from the war in Afghanistan. At first he does everything he has dreamed of, climbs a munro, goes to see Scotland play football at Hampden Park, and gets bought rounds and rounds of drinks by strangers and friends all of whom hail him as a hero. But as he is forgotten by the people around him and moves into a flat and life of his own the trauma he suffered as the sole survivor of an explosion that tore apart his jeep and the bodies of his friends emerges and takes over. A really good primer on the true cost of modern soldiering, on PTSD and the lack of support for returning soldiers, and with an in depth section on PTSD, the war in Afghanistan, the World War I comic strip Charley's War that first spoke about the reality of life for soldiers on the western front. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is that I feel it lack the subtlety and quality of drawing of Charley's War, but it is much shorter.

this book brings to life the story of a scottish soldier going to Iraq serving there and coming back to a life in civvy street where degradation sets in. This place where we live is definitely not a place for Heroes!
