'Tricia Sullivan is why I refuse to give up on science fiction' Pat Cadigan

Review

Tricia Sullivan produces intricate and beautifully written hardcore feminist SF that makes no compromise with her readers or the market; this makes her a precious commodity. (GUARDIAN )

Tricia Sullivan's latest novel splices the industrial espionage of Willian Gibson's PATTERN RECOGNITION to the alternative realms that Philip K Dick made us believe possible, and explores what happens when these tangential worlds collide. Finely honed ch (STARBURST ) --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

I am not a science fiction reader but I picked this one up in my local library and thought it looked interesting. The heroine is watching "the Grid" and reporting back to her bosses the Machine Front. The Grid is perhaps overlaying the Earth, perhaps another planet, perhaps imaginary/virtual reality? It seems to be intelligent but is it malevolent or just a victim of the humans who would "rape" it's treasures? What takes place there is real -- or is it? Could it be all an advertising man's fantasy where it becomes possible to accurately predict what will be successful. Messages about alternative realities abound -- is the arcane world of karate any more real? Is it really more honourable than the world of the masses, or is our heroine safer in prison with armed robbers and the like?

Having finished the book I am not sure I am any wiser but I certainly enjoyed the time spent with this book and feel sure it is one that will remain with me for a long time to come, it is certainly different and thought invoking.

this book really is wonderful. sullivan takes standard sf concepts such as war and alternate reality and feeds them through the distorted lens of our modern conusmer society where everything is a target market to produce a truly dazzling read. this is modern survival writing and we desperately need this. the comparisons to phillip k. dick are completely justified although i found sullivan more entertaining than dick and i really can't think of a more relevant sf novel i have read in a long time.

its also wonderful to have a hero who is a black female with possible mental health issues. a complete breath of fresh air in this genre.

if you want to see just how important sf is to our everyday lives then i suggest reading this book. but be warned. she doesn't pull her punches! and congratulations to orbit for publishing writing that takes risks like this one does. more please

Really didn't do it for me at all - I found it really hard to follow. Just I was getting into it, it kept jumping somewhere else and I had to start working out what was going on all over again. In the end I was unable to finish it which for someone who hates leaving a book part way through hardly ever happens.
