This book was lent to me a few years ago by a friend, and just recently I found myself wanting to read it again (and it is a "read again" book)! So I found it on Amazon, and was pleased to find it as enjoyable the 2nd, 3rd, 4th time round. It is the tale from the point of two sisters, which covers a broad range of topics, mainly concerning growing up, people changing, fitting in... but if those were the only things the book was about, it would be quite predictable. Luckily, the book goes far further than that, the vivid descriptions of the setting and characters weave a rich tapestry... There's the stunning, sequinned, elegant older sister Rosa - "The Virgin Queen", always surrounded by hopeful men, and the best "friend" - Jo, and the the mysterious lodger who baptises you by just saying hello...and they aren't even the main characters. Eliza and Lily are the main characters, Lily with all her secret fears, the Left Over Nazi - and all her secret dreams... and Eliza with the ability to see things with her heart and her head, who half falls in love with the lodger... he calls her Eliza-blossom, just as an every day name. The unexpected lies at ever corner in the book, making the simple story of five people turn into a gripping tale that you can't put down. I haven't desribed the book very well, you really have to read the book yourself to see what I mean. Buy it, and become immersed in a shimmering world of dreams, fears and emotion.
