Two weeks ago, I had not heard of "Shut the Box" but, researching through toys looking for educational Christmas presents for my grand-children (three and one), toys with an emphasis on mathematics, I discovered this type. How useful Amazon is and its customer reviews; it beats hours on the high street. Once I knew what they were and how the game was played, I thought one to six and even one to ten would be limited so I looked further, discovered there was one to twelve and then double sets like this, making the game faster for two people.
It arrived very quickly, is well-made in "Eco-bamboo", which will please by son-in-law, an environmental consultant, has two pairs of good-sized dice, a brief set of instructions and all in a simply but firm cardboard box. Having played it a little, it seems substantial and strong, which is what children's toys need to be. Not a bit of tacky plastic in sight! It ticks a lot of boxes.
Time well tell how useful it turns out to be but I am pleased with this pre-Christmas purchase; it is very reasonably priced, looks well made, pleasing to the eye and it will certainly help to build their arithmetical understanding while having fun too. It is also a game which will bring the family together, a good idea in this age of individual computer games.
