I've read one of David Morrell's books before (Desperate Measures) and was disappointed with its overall composition and its somewhat slapdash feel. This book is a much better effort with a more complex and altogether better written plot.
*Possible Spoilers*
The story is basically two separate plots in one, with the hero, photographer Mitch Coltrane, having to battle with two very different enemies but both of whom want to end his life. The two plots are nicely linked together and Mitch is kept on the run from various sinister elements throughout the book keeping the pace ticking along nicely. After only having read two Morrell books I cannot say if all his books contain such a high body count, but certainly this book kept the undertakers of Los Angeles in good business!
Two of my criticisms of his other book were that the logic of the plot was suspect and the love element in the book was clumsily written. This time both these elements are developed in a much more accomplished manner with the story never entering farcical realms and the romance sections (which are quite common in this particular novel) being handled with sensitivity and feeling.
After reading his other book I felt that David Morrel deserved at least another chance to be read but after Double Image I will actively search out another of his works so impressed I am with this book.
