Amazon.co.uk Review

Double Fudge continues the embarrassing adventures of Peter Hatcher's little brother Fudge. Now aged five and back in New York he is causing 12-year-old Peter as much pain and nuisance as in the previous stories, begun with Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing. Narrated sensitively by Peter, this instalment covers Fudge's obsession with money (and thus, with his new rich friend Richie Potter), his horror at finding there's another Farley Drexel in the world, getting Uncle Feather to talk and the realisation by Peter that Fudge is growing up.

The presence of Harry Potter, the internet and mobile phones will appear as anachronisms to Judy Blume's first generation of fans who met the Hatchers in the 1970s and 1980s, but will obviously not be blinked at by the intended audience of today's children. Though the world in which Blume is writing may have aged since she first endeared herself to young readers, her characters and their problems remain universally appealing. Two Hatcher families, two Farley Drexels and two girl cousins mean double trouble for adolescent Peter, double sympathy from pre-teen readers and most likely double fun for younger readers. As for Fudge, he's a little confused at first if it means fun or trouble for him, but he (and we) soon find out.

Double Fudge offers one alternative look at American values--Peter's cousins don't eat candy or watch TV--but by the end reassures us that the American childhood we know from books and films is still munching its popcorn, going to grade school and being smart with its parents. Long live super double Fudge! (Ages 7-12) --Olivia Dickinson --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

...tells of the irritating Fudge's newfound obsession with money, but like me with euros, he has no idea of real value. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I'm 15 Years Old, yet I must have read this book 6, 7, maybe 8 times. It is simply hilarious:

"Fudge is back! And he's driving his big brother Peter completely mad.

Some things never change. Like Fudge - also known as Farley Drexel Hatcher. He may be nearly six, but he is still one BIG heap of trouble. Fudge has discovered that mney makes the world go round - and he wants lots of it! Whether he's printing his own Fudge bucks, playing Monopoly with a credit card or extorting enough from the tooth fairy to buy a city (which he'd call Fudgington), Fudge is determined to get more than his fair share of the green stuff.

But worse is to come. For Fudge's new obsession takes the whole family to Washington where they bump into long-lost Cousin Howie and his two dreadful daughters, the Natural Beauties. They're the most awful relatives ever. And they're coming to stay...

A delicious treat for Judy Blume fans - DOUBLE FUDGE means double the fun!"

I think the blurb hits the nail on the head. Fudge's antics are simply hilarious, and I couldn't help but laugh out loud throughout, gaining me some funny looks on the airplane or the school bus I can tell you! Now that I've gone back and read it again, I will definately be buying the rest, going back to the beginning with "Fourth Grade Nothing" and continuing on, as I just couldn't put this book down. For any child, male or female, I think they would LOVE it - an adult with a good sense of humour? Why not! I would recommend though that adult readers go into this book with an open-minded approach. It is aimed at children, so don't be expecting complex sentence structures and intertwining sub-plots. As long as you're okay with rolling from one hysterical moment to the next, BUY IT NOW!

I will leave you with my favourite quote from any of the hundreds of books I've read throughout my lifetime:

"We don't have the money to buy...' I could tell Mom was having a hard time explaining this. She thought for a minute before she finished, '...just for the sake of buying. Money doesn't grow on trees.'
'I know it doesn't grow on trees,' Fudge said. 'You get it at the cash machine.'
'You can't just go to the cash machine whenever you want money,' Mom told him.
'Yes, you can,' Fudge said. 'You put in your card and money comes out. It works every time.'
'No. You have to deposit money into your account first,' Mom said. 'You work hard and try to save part of your salary each week. The cash machine is just a way to get some money out of your account. It doesn't spit out money because you want it. it's not that easy.'
'I know Mom,' Fudge said. 'Sometimes you have to stand in line."

You can never have too much Fudge! 9 Sep 2005
By Sunny Dae - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
YES! Fudge is back! I'm not ashamed to admit that I was as excited to learn of the latest installment now as I was at the age of 9, when "Superfudge" was published. :-) And I was not disappointed. Fudge is one of Judy Blume's most endearing characters, a five going on forty year old whose quirky approach to life always ends up causing problems for his older brother Peter. This time around, Fudge's new obsession with money leads to more embarrassing misadventures, and indirectly to an unwanted family reunion with distant relatives. A new twist here is the addition of a younger cousin to the usual cast of characters, a four year old who may just be Fudge's troublemaking match. It's interesting to watch Fudge beginning to experience the same kind of frustration that Peter suffered through in the first three books. We can only hope that he doesn't learn from it TOO quickly!

In response to the review complaining about the 21st century pop culture references that don't synch with the 70's feel of the earlier books, well, granted the first books are a bit dated upon re-reading 30 years later (when was the last time you saw an elevator man, for example), just as "Double Fudge" will seem dated 30 years from now. But, you can't predict what will or will not still be in style a couple decades from now, and the writing would have to be pretty bare bones if Blume had avoided any mention of things that are in vogue today. Besides which, I think I got my biggest laugh at Fudge's eccentric superstition about Harry Potter - "DON'T SAY HIS NAME OUT LOUD!" :-)

I'm thrilled to add more Fudge to my collection of beloved children's books, and can't wait to introduce him to my own "mini-me" in a few more years. Thank you, Judy Blume!

I'm 16 years old, but since I was such a big fan of Fudge, I just had to buy this book! Even though it's a children's book, it was really good and didn't fail to make me laugh out loud.

Double Fudge 6 Oct 2003
By Tina Barrett - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
As a fourth grade teacher, I love reading the Fudge books to my students. They love hearing what Fudge is up to. My students were so excited when Double Fudge was published. I recommend this book to anyone who likes to laugh. Fudge is always funny. In the story, Fudge is five (almost six) and Peter is in 7th grade. As everyone knows Fudge has his own way of seeing things--Fudge has not changed. Fudge is obsessed with MONEY. He is always talking, singing, counting, or trying to acquire money. He even creates his own money "Fudge Bucks". The Hatchers go to Washington D.C. to show Fudge how real money is created. The family meets their long lost cousins. The cousins come home with the Hatchers. Poor Peter, now he has to deal with Fudge, the Natural Beauties, and the new Farley Drexel Hatcher. Another Fudge, OH, NO!
