Biography

If John Lennon had only been one of the four members of the Beatles, his artistic immortality would already have been assured. The so-called "smart Beatle," he brought a penetrating intelligence and a stinging wit both to the band's music and its self-presentation. But in such songs as "Strawberry Fields Forever," "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)," "Rain" and "In My Life," he also marshaled… Read more in Amazon's John Lennon Store

Product Description

CD Description

To mark what would have been John Lennon's 70th birthday, Yoko Ono has personally overseen a project to remaster and re-release all of his key post-Beatles work.

For Double Fantasy Stripped Down, original producer Jack Douglas and Ono revisit the original master to reveal the heart of the songs and that voice without the 80's production and effects. This pack contains the original version of the album, remastered as a bonus disc.

Product Description

(2CD) Yoko Ono supervised 'back-to-basics' 2010 remix of the classic album + newly remastered edition of original 1980 album

Firstly I'm not quite sure why this album gets panned sometimes. It got panned on release (before John was killed) with Charles Shaar Murray calling it "a lousy album" in the NME - wonder what John would have said? He wrote a personal letter to CSM when he reviewed Shaved Fish in 1975 and actually reviewed his review (with typical Lennon humour naturally!). After his death of course everyone bought it and raved about it but now it gets a mixed response.

John wrote and sang these songs in the only way he knew how - with honesty and from the heart and it's the sound of a very happy man which makes it all the more tragic given what happened. I guess some people would prefer that he'd suffered more for his art in the style of Imagine or Plastic Ono Band. I doubt he cared, by 1980 he was singing for himself, Yoko and Sean and who could blame him? They are still beautiful songs today. Plus it's very easy with the benefit of 30 years hindsight to say that the original album sounds dated as some people have, all music dates to a certain degree, which doesn't necessarily make it bad.

Listening to the new version now brings back memories of hearing it for the first time around 1980/81. It does sound a little rough where endings haven't been faded for example (Woman stops abruptly) so in that sense it can sound a little unfinished but mostly the new mix does sound good. Yoko's songs in particular benefit with Kiss Kiss Kiss rocking and the band sounding really tight together. Every Man Has A Woman Who Loves Him is completely reworked although it might have been good if more had been made of a John/Yoko duet on it, perhaps trading verses.

Many people have complained that it's not in the box set but at least it's available separately. It would have been far worse if you'd had to buy the box set just to get it!! Not only that, it's the same price as a single album and you do get the original mix as well so I'd say it's good value for money although shame they couldn't have included the original artwork somehow with it (good though Sean's drawing is).

Before I go any further, I have to admit to being a John Lennon die-hard, but that doesn't mean I praise everything released under his name (I slated the Signature box set) but I'm going to give this a full five stars. Why? Because it's damn good!

I`m not going to suggest that `Double Fantasy' was his best release, not by a long way, but the `stripped down' version presented here on the first CD is nothing short of superb. Okay, the songs themselves are the same, but the way in which they're presented is a world away from 1980. Hell, even the Yoko Ono songs are improved. Every track has been pared of its backing, leaving just the guitars, drums and pianos in place and in doing so, whereas they were previously buried too deep, the vocals have been brought to the fore. In fact, if you close your eyes, you might even start believing Lennon is singing directly to you. The clarity of his voice is awesome; every enunciation can be heard as if you're standing next to him.

`Cleanup Time', which can be seen as a completely different version being nearly a minute longer due to the fadeout and an extra verse midway through , and `I'm Losing You' are crystal clear. Both `Starting Over' and `Dear Yoko' have diction unheard before, the latter extended by 30 seconds as it continues Lennon' s spoken outro to a full close - this time you can hear what he's saying - but it's `Beautiful Boy' and `Watching the Wheels' that make you sit up. The latter makes you believe you were there when it was recorded, whilst the former, free from its double tracking, overdubbing and sound effects, is turned into a folk song. On the other hand, `Woman', given the same treatment, simply makes you want to cry. You can hear things in the vocals that weren't there previously. (Yes, I know they were there, but they couldn't be made out.) Other than the examples mentioned, all the tracks have different timings than their counterparts because of a few seconds of count-ins, etc at the start and slightly earlier fade-outs.

Listen to this and you'll realise why John Lennon was credited as having one of the best voices around.

Worth buying for Clean Up Time alone. I was not particularly fond of this song on the original. However, listening to the stripped down version with Lennon happily ad-libbing his way constructively and melodically through the chorus etc, the song has been transformed into a delight. Its re-arrangement in line with the printed lyrics too was a good productive move. Stripped down is all about heightening the presence of Lennon's voice and for this too I am grateful to Yoko and the production team. Well done.

The only reason I gave this album a 5/5 was because of John's brilliance. All of his 7 songs are just amazing but then you come to Yoko's and she is just dreadful. Read more
