A disturbingly harrowing eye opener., 15 May 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Double Cross (Paperback)
I've been fascinated by Sicilian bred gangs for a number of years, but up until now, the Godfather triligy and a few other films are about as far as it went.
Then I was recommended to read Double Cross. Oh, I haven't picked up a book and read it cover to cover since I was 16 - 10 years ago! What the hell - I bought it anyway. Well, that was it - I could barely put the book down.
The detail is fascinating, describing the humble beginnings of who will eventually become the boss of all bosses, the hardships of life in little Italy to the power of a made man. I found the book totally enveloping, being able to see perspectives from both Sam Giancana and this brother Chuck. The power this man posessed, the corruption in America, the loyality of his soldiers, the wealth, the corruption worldwide, the Holywood rat pack connections, EVERYTHING amazed me. While some of me wanted to respect this man, another part of me was mortified by what happened (and no doubt still happens).
I have only two faults with the book; the deaths of Monroe, JFK and Bobby Kennedy seem (in the scale of the book) to be glazed over. Also, having had "Omerta" drummed into him since a young age and adhearing to this code all of this life, why does Chuck now see it fit to blow the lid on everything that ever meant anything to him?
Enjoy!

By far the best "inside-the mafia" book written so far., 9 April 2001
This review is from: Double Cross (Paperback)
I have just finished reading book called "Bound By Honour" by Joe Bonanno. The writer promises to share with the reader very rare information about The Mob. The reader will wait for that information till the very last page and it never comes. Instead of that Bonanno is trying to whitewash himself and his father with fairy-tales about sicilian "tradition" an "honour". There`s nothing new in this book.
In this comaparison the book "Double-Cross" about Sam "Mooney" Giancana looks like a shining jewel. To start with the writer describes Sam Giancana as a pathological psychopath and is very honest in his writing. There is nothing "honourable" in killing people and gaining wealth by other sinister means.
This approach to Sam Giancana is very believable and describes a life of a man who can`t deal with disappointments like a grown-up man and whose emotional life seem`s to be like a one year old baby`s. This level of honesty in wrtiting this book about a close relative must have been very hard for the writer and the result is a very colourful narrative about a very strange man in a very strange world.
With no unnecessary tales about "honour" and ""tradition" this makes "Double-Cross" the best and most vivid mafia-biography I`ve ever read!

Fantastic!, 28 Dec 2006
This review is from: Double Cross (Paperback)
This is a fantastic book that gives an excellent insight into the Outfit. To my knowledge, their are only 2 books on Sam 'Mooney' Giancana and this one is definately the best.
It was a worthwhile buy and an excellent read. I recommend this to any Mafia reader.
