James White has been a mainstay of hard SF since his first sale in 1953. Some of his other notable titles are Second Ending (1962), The Watch Below (1966), All Judgement Fled (1968), Dark Inferno (1972), The Dream Millennium (1974), Underkill (1979), and The Silent Stars Go By (1991).
