4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining thriller 29 Feb 2012
The basic storyline for this film is that a US senator who may be dirty is murdered by an assassin and all the signs point to it being a Russian agent known by the code name 'Cassius'. Richard Gere as retired CIA agent Paul Shepherdson spent most of his career hunting down Cassius and his team and is convinced that he is dead but CIA Director Martin Sheen drags him out of retirement and pairs him up with a hotshot young FBI agent to track him down once and for all. I guessed who Cassius is very early on in the film (in fact when I watched a trailer) and the reveal is way too early for this sort of film but there are plenty more twists and some realistic action scenes. This film doesn't feature any big set piece special effects but the acting is solid and the story will keep you entertained to the end.
The transfer to blu ray is spot on and the soundtrack competent but it won't rock your system.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty decent spy thriller 24 Feb 2013
One of the major problems with `The Double' is the trailer advertising it. If you've seen it, it tells you most of the story (and one of the twists). However, I only found that out by reading the internet forums about this movie. I suppose I fortunate enough not to see the trailer, hence I quite enjoyed finding out what was happening as it went along.

It's nothing too revolutionary - old dog spy (Gere) paired with up and coming spy (Grace) - it's effectively a mismatch/buddy-cop film but with spies. It flits between action and talking, with a few surprises thrown into the mix. Plus it isn't too long, so it fits everything in and quite nicely.

But, although it's a decent watch, it probably could have been better. It gives away one of the surprises too early, which may lead some to lose interest. However, at least there are a few more twists to come which I'm guessing the writer hoped would make up for it.

In short, it's not bad, but not a classic. Plus, avoid watching its trailer at all costs. Long gone are the days when a trailer is made to tease and draw you to a movie without revealing anything. I decided to watch the trailer AFTER I'd seen the film and I can see what people meant about it. I really don't know what the film-makers were doing with the trailer - it's effectively a ninety minute film condensed into a couple of minutes.

Overall this is a decent and entertaining production for which you have to keep expectations low on all levels in order to enjoy it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lacklustre 31 Jan 2013
I should confess that Richard Gere is not one of my favourite actors. However, how he got duped into this weak espionage thriller raises questions about his judgement. The story line is creaky, corny and underpowered. Topher Grace may have acted his heart out but Gere and Sheen were on automatic transmission, no doubt because they realised that the screenplay was pretty awful.

The lack of tension and ability to bond with the main protagonists probably consigned this movie to a 'direct to DVD' release in the UK. I would have been very disappointed if I had paid good money to see this meagre offering in a cinema.

4.0 out of 5 stars Double Your Pleasure? 25 April 2014
This film started out as a 5 star, then with double twist plots, it ended up a 4. Richard Gere stars as a retired CIA agent lured back to work to help find a serial Russian killer, Cassius. The head of the CIA played by Martin Sheen seems to know it all and urges Gere to work with a young FBI agent played by Topher Grace. First of all, this is a fantasy, no where will a CIA agent lower himself to work with the FBI.

Early in in the film, a plot twist occurs and we are privy to info others have no knowledge. This us a rough and tumble film, that had such potential. Richard Gere is one of those consummate actors that can joke any film together, and he does it here. Topher Grace is over acted and overwhelmed in this film. The issei is finding the Russian Cassius and bringing him to justice, but along the way many other Russians are found, and we okay games. Lots of lovely scenes of DC, and lots of ugly scenes of DC and the rivers left untreated. Old factories and trailers are the in mode.

This is a film for a rainy day, it could have been a sunny day, but there you have it.

Recommended. prisrob 04-25-14

Following something as loved as "Submarine" was always going to be a stretch - but Richard Ayoade's second feature "The Double" pulled it of with style. A great thriller with a top cast too. However British fans wanting to own it on BLU RAY have limited choices...

The American BLU RAY on Image Entertainment is REGION A LOCKED - so it won't play on our machines unless they're chipped to be 'all regions' (which few are).

But there is a EURO release (I think its German) that is Region B - so has no playback problems. But it's pricier that the American equivalent.

So until someone ends the restrictions of Region Coding - or gives this film a reasonably priced release in the UK - you're stuck with those limited choices...
