Product Description

Product Description

Colin Leckey embarked on a quixotic quest to visit Europe's five smallest states (Liechtenstein, San Marino, the Vatican City, Monaco and Andorra), and two smallest self-governing territories (the Faroe Islands and Gibraltar). Along the way, he hoped to discover the secrets behind their proud and enduring sovereignty in an increasingly borderless, globalised world. He did, and also found abseiling sheep, armies that clock off for lunch, and monkeys that'd have your belongings for breakfast as soon as look at you. Not to mention feudal monarchies, puffins for dinner, and a disturbingly large number of stamp museums. Colin Leckey was born in Lancaster, a town with a population larger than all of the countries on his trip except Andorra. He has lived in south London for the past five years. This is his first book (writing, not reading)."

Unique travel book 13 Jan 2007
This is a well written, very enjoyable and probably unique travelogue in Brysonesque style around the five smallest countries in Europe. They may be just "Dots on the Map", but they'll be a lot more than that to you after reading this book, for we discover much about their history, their people, and how they came to be. (Never thought you could just BUY a country? Read about Liechtenstein).

Combining information and entertainment, this book is a must for anyone who enjoys travel to unusual destinations or just reading about them. Highly recommended.

Ever wondered why Great Big Italy has never kicked Little San Marino into the Med? Or how the famous apes appeared on the Rock of Gibraltar? With this new remarkable travel anthology, Colin Leckey illuminates these and other mysteries during his quirky odyssey around Europe's seven smallest states, the Continent's "accidents of history" as he dubs them. In a colourful and insightful narrative intertwining historical and contemporary anecdotes from his own travels, Leckey skilfully peels away the layers of obscurity surrounding Europe's minnow nations, revealing a fascinating history and the secrets behind their enduring independence against the odds. Laced with dry humour and an eye for detail, this book fills a useful gap between the history books and the Lonely Planet, and is surely destined to become the bible of the European micro-traveller. Highly enjoyable and thoroughly recommended.
