The label which took Pat Boone, the Fontane Sisters and Gale Storm to the heights had quite an impressive country catalogue and usually did first class covers of black music. In 1950 the label began by signing a black vocal group called the Griffin Brothers who never troubled a chart and clearly a new policy was needed if black music was to become popular on the mainstream. Thus Pat Boone would do a cover-more a revival of- the Griffin Brothers Tra La La and it went on the B side of his first single for the label.Boone easily became the biggest act on Dot
In 1957 came a surprise hit from a non singer Tab Hunter whose cover of Young love went Worldwide
The label survived into the 70s when it was bought out by ABC.
Their house band the Billy Vaughan Orchestra charted in their own right and many hits came through licensing or distributing.

some good stuff, some lame stuff 17 Oct 2007

If this is the best rock music from the catalogue of Dot Records, it's no wonder they're out of business. There are a few good songs, but a lot of it is watered-down rockabilly or Pat Boone-ish covers of R&B songs, and a lot of it leans more toward country. My favorite song is "Transfusion" a really weird song by someone named Nervous Norvus about having to get blood transfusions from all of the car accidents he has had. This is not essential stuff, you can pretty much skip it and not miss anything.
