Govt Mule first came to my awareness when I read about them in the Free Appreciation Society fanzine. This being their original line-up, comprising three guys involved in the Allman Band scene - Warren Haynes (v,g), Allen Woody (b) and Matt Abts (dr). The first song they ever jammed together was "Mr Big" by Free, so this made me prick my ears up straight away! "Dose" is their second album - it's raw, innovative and almost entirely jammed live in the studio. The music lives and breathes, as the three guys bounce off each other. Warren Haynes' amazing vocals, superb guitar playing and wonderful songwriting set him apart from anybody else. Allen Woody's bass playing is a masterclass in how to make that instrument live - as he once put it, "Lay down a groove, like a man!" Tragically, this man-mountain died suddenly in 2000. Although he played on the third Govt Mule album too, for me, this is the one which stands as a testament to his playing. There's not a lot of point going through the tracks on this album one by one - it is as if somebody took rock, blues and even jazz and chucked it all in a mincing machine. It is like nothing you've ever heard before - just buy it!
