Product Description

Product Description

Dorset must rank as one of the most unspoilt counties in England. Dominating the landscape are the chalk downs open, sweeping, grassy uplands that stretch from the former forest lands of Cranborne Chase on the Wiltshire and Hampshire borders right across the middle of the county to the coast. The many ridge-top footpaths (including one starting from Cerne Abbas which ends with the Cerne Giant in all its glory) that cross these downs provide splendid walking and a succession of panoramic views.

These guides are brilliant. The walks are arranged with the shortest at the beginning of the book and the longest at the end, so if you haven't done much walking you can ease yourself in gently.

Each walk is detailed over about five pages. There is a Ordnance Survey map showing the complete walk, though they are not large and I would therefore advise you to take a 1:25000 map of the area and a compass that you know how to use. There is a general description of the walk with points corresponding to the map and advice on where to park the car or catch a bus.

I would consider the Pathfinder series to be the best available, as the descriptions of the walks compared to my experiences of these walks mean that the authors must have actually done them.

Walks book 16 July 2010

Easy to read and follow with excellent maps, but a bit difficult to open fully and fold flat when in use without damaging the spine. A spiral wire binding or ring type binding would perhaps be better to allow this.

Like all the OS/Jarrold Pathfinder guides, this compilation of 28 walks in Dorset is excellent. My only small complaint - some sort of lay-flat binding (a spiral binding perhaps?) would make it easier to use. However, this is true of almost all walking guides. For content and presentation these Jarrold/OS guides can't be beaten.
