Product Description

The memoirs of Rifleman Benjamin Harris of his part in the Napoleonic Wars. Harris was an illiterate Dorset shepherd, recruited into the British army in 1803. He fought with the 95th Rifle regiment in Denmark, Spain and the Netherlands between 1806 and 1814. Later, working as a shoemaker in Soho, his recollections of the war were written down by Henry Curling and published in 1848. This edition has been re-edited by Eileen Hathaway to put Harris' disjointed recollections into chronological order. Hathaway has also provided linking passages giving historical context to the story, with quotations from the diaries and memoirs of Harris' fellow soldiers. Also included are 13 illustrations and 6 maps.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, 26 Oct 2010
This review is from: A Dorset Rifleman: The Recollections of Benjamin Harris (Paperback)
Although very informative, I was expecting more recollections of actual battles and was dissapointed that most of the book deals with the living conditions and daily life as a rifleman. Having said that, it gives a good insight into the daily trials and tribulations that a soldier had to put up with during this period.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Read for Napoleonic Fans, 12 Sep 2006
By Stephen Moss - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: A Dorset Rifleman: The Recollections of Benjamin Harris (Paperback)
This is a unique book. It is one of the few memoirs of a line infantryman from the Napoleonic Wars. It is all the more interesting in that it is a soldier of the famous 95th Rifles. The original version was a stream of conciousness tome dictated by Rifleman Harris some years after the war. In was not in chronological order and could be quite confusing to all but the most informed student of the war. Eileen Hathaway has done two marvelous things in this version that make it much more accessible. First she has sorted out the original narrative of Rifleman Harris in chronological order with very brief explanations of the context in which they were written. (With one chapter of all the bits even she could not figure out when they happended.) Secondly, she has incorporated extracts from other memoirs of the time that bear on the same events that Rifleman Harris is describing. This also helps to give context. Rifleman at the time often had little or no understanding of the larger context. Not only did they suffer the same lack of view of the entire battlefield as any infantryman, but the nature of how riflemen were employed lead to them generally seeing an even more restricted portion of the battle. Hence Eilens narrative and the related memoir extracts puts everything in a perspective.

All ain all a great read and a perspective hard to come by elsewhere on Napoleonic service.
