THE definitive guide for Dorset,
By
This review is from: Dorset: The Complete Guide (Paperback)
The initial impression on opening this book may be a slight disappointment that nearly all of the illustrations are in black and white. However, on closer examination, the reader will soon realise that this is a subject the author loves a great deal and has put so much effort into it.It is basically a gazetteer of Dorset and has a number of sections on : Castles and Forts; Medieval Churches; Geology and Scenery; Thomas Hardy; Villages; etc... Each entry is given a grade of up to 4 stars to show the author's recommendations on "worthiness" of a visit. Although this is purely subjective, it is certainly a good indication for the person trying to decide which of a number of destinations to visit. Whenever I decide to tour around Dorset to find something new, this is a constant companion! Well worth its purchase price. (This is one of a series of books from Dovecote Press that specialise on the history, geology, etc. of Dorset.)

An indispensible companion on all my travels through Dorset,
By A Customer
This review is from: Dorset: The Complete Guide (Paperback)
The book has gazetteer entries for all the towns, villages and hamlets of Dorset with full descriptions of all that can be seen and visited. There are additional 2 page spreads on churches, local architecture, Thomas Hardy, Dorset Writers, archeology and many more subjects. There are also lists of all the monuments, museums, houses and tourist places with opening times and price guides. The tourist information summaries at the end of the book are frequently revised. The suthor's style is lively, entertaining and at times idiosyncratic, readable in it's own right.

I found this guide very useful as preparation for a first visit to Dorset; it is well laid out and there is specific information for tourists as well as background sections.
