Book Description

9 Jan 2012 55s

Dorothea Lange (1895–1965) was a highly acclaimed social realist photographer who recorded one of the most important historical periods in American social history. In 1935, tired of studio portraiture, she began working for the Farm Security Administration (FSA), and created many of the images that define the Depression and the disastrous migration of farming families to the West in the popular imagination. This monograph is a concise introduction to her work, with an essay, 55 photographs and picture-by-picture commentaries.

Product Description

Review

'Lange's work defines an era of destitution and drought, and still resonates even now. This is the perfect introduction to one of the world's greatest photojournalists.
Practical Photography

'Lange was the first woman to be awarded the Guggenheim Photography Fellowship and this book showcases her most famous work, an arresting 55-picture, chronologically ordered documentation of the lives of migrant workers during the Great Depression.'
The Independent

5.0 out of 5 stars The Truth Revealed - Starkly! 3 Mar 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
The cover shot is the best-known image of this amazing woman photographer's vast output. Considered against the state of her world,, she used her camera like a hammer to hit the Establishment with the truth about conditions around them. Her eye was brilliant at seeing the core of the situation in front of her. I wasn't aware of her work until now. I have gained another facet to my photo-vision. Her own situation was tragic enough, in itself, yet she ploughed on - literally. This is a case-study worth reading for the humanity it reveals. Get it. Read it. Study the pictures. Learn something new. Unforgettable.

Is a book that should be at home for photo quality and why it is a classic. Although somewhat smaller

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but could be bigger! 12 Sep 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
The book was good and had everything you would expect. My only dislike was the size of the book. The book is a square and it takes away from the photos with such a small size. But other than that it's OK!
