Product Description

Product Description

Doris Day is an icon of our times. One simply has to mention the titles of some of her most famous songs - "Secret Love", "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps" and "Que Sera, Sera" to name a few - to identify immediately the attractive blonde who made mothers worldwide hope that their sons could bring home someone just like her. She dressed so exquisitely that girls all over America wanted to wear the kind of swishing skirts that were her trademark. Yet this is only part of the Doris Day story: the life of the girl born Doris Kappelhoff in April 1924 has been much more interesting and, in its way, more tragic than the films she starred in with Cary Grant and Rock Hudson might lead us to believe. She married four times, the third of which ended in disaster; it was only after the death of that husband, Marty Melcher, that she discovered he had not only squandered her $20 million fortune but had left her with $500,000 worth of debts. For the past twenty years, she has devoted much of her time to animals, for whom she provides a "hotel" at her home and runs an animal ambulance service. In this beautifully illustrated biography of a unique star, Michael Freedland tells the remarkable story of a screen legend, as well as documenting her life away from the cameras. It is a story full of twists and turns that will surprise and delight her millions of fans throughout the world.

I am extremely disappointed in this book. There are many factual errors made by Mr. Freedland, not the least of which is a picture of June Allison, not Doris Day, on page 124! In my opinion, Mr. Freedland has not done a very good in researching this book at all. Those of us that he refers to as "... that growing coterie now known as Doris Day fans" have eagerly awaited the book are now disgusted that this book was ever published! We do not agree with Mr. Freedland's negative opinions about Ms Day or her legacy to the entertainment industry.

How on earth could this book get published? It has several factual errors - the worse being a full page colour photo that is actually June Allyson! It amazes me that such things can happen when all the author had to do was contact any one of the Doris Day fan clubs (2 are in the UK and I run the Australian club) for any confirmation on facts and photos. There is also a huge amount of information available at the touch of a button on the internet... There is no in-depth information and it really is a glorified magazine article. How very, very dissapointing. I give it 2 stars only for the photos (except June of course!).

I can say two good things about this book: it contains some nice photos and it was printed on good quality paper. Other than that, it contains a lot of incorrect, incomplete, unfair, and sensationalized information. The author repeatedly offers references to Ms. Day's autobiography and other sources, but takes things out-of-context to suit his own purposes. He likes to dwell on Ms. Day's sex life, making his book a somewhat tawdry, "tabloid-like" publication. Furthermore, his style of writing makes reading "hard work."... Sadly, he goes out of his way to portray her as an eccentric recluse who "loves spiders." Just for the record, Ms. Day is not a hermit! She's a great lady who loves all of God's creatures and respects their place in the world. The boxed sets of CDs and books which were released by Bear Family Records a few years ago were a great tribute to Ms. Day. Mr. Freedland's book is not.
