Curve's Doppelganger... what a stupendous splurge of noise, bass and feedback! And all tempered with Toni Halliday's distinctive vocals - falling somewhere between intimate crooning and a cold-hearted sneer. Genius. Years ahead of its time, you could be forgiven for being 10 years out in your estimate of the release date. But, somehow, Doppelganger is a product of 1992, sharing chart time with the retro rock blockbusters of REM's Automatic for the People and the Lemonheads' It's A Shame About Ray.

The musical point of closest approach is probably My Bloody Valentine's Loveless, but Doppelganger is more pop-savvy, sounding more like 10 variations on Soon (Loveless' rippling, infectious closer) than the prickly remainder of that album. Unlike many other bands to bear the "shoegazing" monicker, there's no woolly whack-a-delay-on-it--we're-done attitude in Doppelganger -- instead there's an aura of calculated determination and direction to the whole affair, and very welcome it is, too. Doppelganger's high points are opener Already Yours, Horror Head, the sprawling brilliance of Fait Accompli and Clipped... oh, it's all good. Pride of place, though, is Lillies Dying, in which icy cold lyrics about a failing relationship (?) soar above a cyberpunk soundtrack. Yes, it is the best song ever... and the louder the better.

Doppelganger was Curve's high point -- the preceding EPs are brilliant but not as polished, and the follow-ups were incrementally more generic. Pubic Fruit, Cuckoo and Come Clean are all worth having, but if you're new to Curve then picking up Doppelganger is guaranteed not to disappoint.
