As a child growing up in the seventies, Michael Bentine was the kindly, avuncular blazer wearing man with the infectious giggle in Potty Time. Had I been born a decade or so earlier I would have known him as one of the founding members of comedic anarchists the Goons. Both these impressions are true but barely scratch the surface of an extraordinary man. Bentine witnessed the abominations of Belsen but still lived for a world of laughter, was at home with both science and séance, had a huge capacity for both creative and technological invention, and had been a key member of British intelligence. Fortunately he was able to share some of these experiences in his `Door Marked...' books and in this splendid account which typically sees a physically brave man take the morally courageous step of nailing his colours to the mast when it comes to the paranormal. Without fear of ridicule he weaves a sincere and often touching account of his own beliefs and the experiences that have shaped his spiritual life together with a heartfelt plea that people of goodwill continue to explore the world beyond the solely material. This is not for everyone; those who make a fetish of empiricism will remain unconvinced but even they cannot lightly dismiss the author's scientific understanding ,sincerity or total lack of Shirley McLaine style new age 'flakiness'. It is deeply disappointing that this book is no longer available new, perhaps anyone interested in reviving this may want to contact Faber Finds who print re-issues on demand .

If you are genuinely interested in the unknown there is no greater guide than Michael.
He was an innovative comedian who knew suffering which made him all the more compassionate.
His father may well have been the first scientist to investigate the paranormal so Michael
was introduced to the subject in childhood. The strange experiences he had-especially during
the war-defy our rational and reasoning. But be assured this book is not a trip through
the imagination as Michael was as authentic and intelligent as you could hope a witness to be.
For myself, having studied the unknown for forty years,I do not know of any other publication
that even comes close to this (book)for whilst others may write on the subject Michael lived it.
Intellectually challenging,as spookey as darkness, but as uplifting as light.
Enter his Door...but you may never be the same again.

This man was " The Spiritual Goon" He was one of the four Original Goons back in those innocent days of the 50s. He was a very Spiritual man and inspired lots of people with his books and this book IS no exception. I would recommend you read all his Books to see "the Bigger Picture" this particular book inspires the reader greatly. Read it!!

Michael Bentine lived when i was listening to the radio`s the goon show
and he was one of the goons.
When i read his book call `A Door marked Summer` i found he was a remarkable
man. Being of the paranormal his whole family were gifted.
The book `Doors of the Mind` is just mind blowing. Teaching us a whole new
meaning to the spiritual world from a man who was so inteligent.
The only other person i have read that is also like minded is
Shirley Maclean.`Out on a Limb`...get reading and discover what life is all about...

An amazing man with a fascinating history - this book describes him growing up in England with parents who were serious researchers of the paranormal. Michael then developed his own abilities which will both fascinate and perhaps scare, but it is clear that he was a good, honest, caring and hugely gifted man. This book gave me an insight into the man that I would never have guessed.
