Product Description

Product Description

Set in the magnificent scenery of North Wales, the Doorkeeper takes you into a time when livings were earned by great physical work and family love was the norm. The simple pleasures of rural country life with its trials and tribulation made for happy days. Jonathan is ten years old. He forced by the Great Depression to abandon his privileged upbringing in affluent southern England and live with his maternal grandparents on their remote hill farm near Capel Garmon in far off N. Wales. But he can have no idea what wonderful, life transforming events are about to befall him. Together with his ragged cousin William, Jonathan and the reader are taken into another world, Ansaurius where we learn of the real power of Mother Earth as she provides for mankind by growing houses from seed and much more. They learn how we are all in danger of abusing her benevolence by greed and pollution long before it became fashionable.

From the Back Cover

This novel is the first of seven. The time: summer 1931. The location: a sheep farm on a mountainside in N. Wales, UK. A ten-year-old boy has been dumped onto his grandparents by a self-made London society socialite who has deserted him and his father for a fascist envoy. There is another child on the farm, William. Their friendship blossoms; William if he had lived in Dickensian London would have been the Artful Dodger. They roam the hills and forests and are confronted by The Doorkeeper, the local squire gone mad as is said by locals. But he is far more than that. Through him they visit the world of Ansaurius, a series of magic that will make your heart fly.

4.0 out of 5 stars A compelling read, 25 Oct 2009
By Mr. Colin James (Kent) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Although I don't normally read this genre of book, it was recommended to me so I thought I would try it whilst on holiday. The first few chapters were occupied with scene setting but once the subject moved to the Welsh countryside the story developed strongly and imaginatively.
It is one of those books where you become intrigued by the characters and, in this instance, their relationship with the worlds around them.
The author has managed to achieve the desired effect of leaving the reader wanting more - a sequel is promised - which should bring the recognition he deserves.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Inspiring Read, 7 Mar 2009
"The Doorkeeper" by Octavius Pitt

I thoroughly enjoyed reading "the Doorkeeper". The author certainly immersed himself in the culture of Wales and in the period in which the book was set.
The period when people lived off the land and the sense of community was all important. The author's powers of description were truly inspiring and I felt I could really envisage the places and the wild life so described in a really vivid way.
The characters of the two boys were strongly depicted - so different and yet they formed such a strong bond.
The mysterious element left me pondering.Old Silas certainly brought a quirky element into the book. Then, also, the concept of Ansaurius and Mother Earth all being undergirded by the Creator God and how we all play our part in preserving or abusing the Earth.
I will certainly look forward to reading "Doorkeeper Two".
I give the book a 5 star rating.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Doorkeeper Review - a great read, 20 Feb 2009
By LoveBooks (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I was pleasantly surprised when I read this book. It has an element of fantasy which is not usually my cup of tea, however the language is so easy to follow that I almost didn't realise when the book slipped from "real life" into fantasy. I found that I was eager to pick the book up again, to continue reading where I left off. This is not one of those books where you secretly don't want to finish it, but feel that you really should. The story of the two boys trots along so easily and enticingly. The author, like Roald Dahl, clearly remembers exactly how it was to be a young boy, he brings to life just EXACTLY what boys of this age would think, and how they would feel. I am not sure how many of us really remember how it felt to be this young and certainly few of us could express it so well. Overall I would say that this is a well written book, full of interest and adventure, but cleverly of all, it makes me wonder if it is all really true...
