This is regarded as a metal classic not only because it features and was written by metallica`s Jason newsted but because it is what thrash was all about. It is faster than anything and has such a pounding aggressive bass sound and subtle mellow sections within the songs it will keep your attention right through from the pounding Hammerhead and Desecreater to the exellent and classical sounding title track. The metallica influence is there but the only thing to complain about is the sound recording quality but hey remember this was 1985/86 on a cheap budget so as a debut its cool.

This cd ain't bad! At times the songs tend to be a bit overlong - the title track for example - and can seem a little aimless, but great bass playing by Jason Newstead (of Metallica fame), lots of manic guitar solos and, at points, some hilarious high-pitched vocal shenanigans (check out the end of "she took an axe"). The drumming hasn't much in the way of personality but IS solid, and honestly some of the lyrics are actually a bit daft ("hammerhead" for example - could've been written by Beavis & Butthead really). On the whole though it's fast, furious and pretty much of it's time; It's OK! A fairly enjoyable listen worth chucking a couple of quid at. (But no more than a couple of quid!).

This album has blown my mind,, and I'm very happy it has.. Pleasant surprise to find out that Jason Newsted ex Metallica,, co founded the band, played bass and wrote all the lyrics.. The singing in this album is insane,, highest notes you'll hear from a man... And if you're wondering whether to buy this album, listen to Desecrator.. All in all an album for true metalheads and anyone that appreciates well written and constructed music. :)

I bought this when it was first released and I forgot how good it was until recently when I heard a couple of tracks. I'm glad I have a chance to listen to this stuff again. Brings back old memories.

I first heard this on its original release in 1986 on vinyl and 21 years later finally got it on CD. Its a Great heavy metal album and a genuine thrash/speed classic! The nearest comparison i can make is a much faster
hybrid of Judas Priest/Iron Maiden. Vocals are very much in that high range (but never grate unlike some do)and lyrics are interesting covering topics as diverse as sex, nuclear war,an infamous axe murder,Hitler etc. Drumming is not overly technical but is fast and hard with a good solid snare sound. Good duelling guitar work - proper metal riffs, nice clean acoustic in parts and lots of hot guitar leads - again very much in the style of Maiden/Priest. The real star here is a certain Mr Newsted who just a few months later would leave this band for Metallica. You can see why he was picked based on the work on this album but what a tragedy Lars & Co never let him cut loose as he did here! The Bass here is very upfront in the mix and although Newsted favours a pick over fingers its very akin to Steve Harris from Maiden in its clanky tone and the way it drives the music forward. Very aggressive and technical (What should have been heard with Metallica more!) Newsted also wrote most of the lyrics and music here too. Good production also.
Best tracks: Hammerhead, Iron Tears, Doomsday For The Deceiver (Great intro)
For any fan of Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motorhead, Metallica, Death Angel, Dragonforce, Queensryche and all good Metal (no emo, ska,nu here!)
Bonus DVD is a bit raw as to be expected for the age of this but its cool.
