Ok. I'm old. I still clearly remember getting a demo of the first ever DOOM, playing it on my office PC (because I didn't yet have one of my own), then posting off for the full game (yeah, those were the days of snail-mail) and THEN buying a PC so I'd be able to play it when it arrived.
Seriously. Doom was the reason I forsook my trusty Commodore Amiga and bought my first PC.
DOOM! Graphically, there was nothing else like it. It was fast. It was scary as hell. It was challenging. It was FUN! We talked about it, shared solutions, even had dreams about it!
Remember those nasty little fireball-throwing imps? The 'Pink Ponies'? The big flying eyes? Those brainiac spiders with machine guns? And who can ever forget 'winning' and returning to Earth at the end of the game - then how the camera panned slowly to the cute bunny's head... on a stake!
The sequels were great too.
I never thought I'd see a PS3 version, and I was 100% certain this new incarnation would be a huge let-down. It couldn't be as good as the original experience. No way.
It's hard to find anything not to like about this game. If I try to describe it, I'll sound like one of those liars on the shopping channels, continually yelling, "BUT WAIT!!! THERE'S MORE!"
But there really is a lot here. DOOM 3 itself; the Resurrection of Evil add-on pack; `The Lost Mission.' (new content); and the DOOM 3 BFG Edition even includes the original DOOM and DOOM 2 games. (If I'm honest, the biggest thrill for me about this pack was that I was able to play the original again after all these years, complete with the blocky graphics and basic move/aim controls. Hearing that music still does it for me!)
If you played the originals (and if you're sure your ageing heart can stand a few more shocks) BUY THIS GAME.
If you're a young upstart who has no idea what all the fuss is about, BUY THIS GAME. You're in for a treat!
