This is a beautifully produced book. It is definitely a step up from a typical "colouring" book of which we have many! The tough glossy thick board cover is really sturdy protecting the pages inside. The spiral binding is an excellent idea so that there isn't an irritating section between the pages which you can't reach/see properly. The paper on which each of the doodles is printed on is smooth so your pen/pencil will glide over, and quite thick, so you won't get colours bleeding from one page to the next if you decide to use felt pens.
This book will really get its owner thinking. For example, one page provides an outline drawing of a window, and you have to complete the picture to show what you might see outside on Christmas morning. There are plain mittens to decorate, Christmas wrapping paper to design, a Christmas table to be laid and so much more. You get the idea. This book will appear to those who are keen on drawing. My 7 year old who loves sketching couldn't wait to get stuck in. However, for those (like me) who panic at the sight of a blank page, the outlines on each page provide a starting point and inspiration. I do agree with an earlier reviewer that it is a shame that there are no doodles based on the nativity story itself which seems to have been overlooked in this collection and I've deducted a star for this reason.
This does cost more than a colouring book, but it would make a great present to give to a child who enjoys drawing over the age of about 5, once they are past the scribbling stage. My 6 and 7 year olds think it is great, and if you get this, and a packet of crayons, I suspect you'll find yourself with a quiet and contented child come Christmas morning. Oh, and it is quite good fun for adults too!
