This book is such a brilliant idea! An adult tells the child the simple instructions for colouring in the plate on each page to make a drawing of a meal ( all very artistic and completely unreal of course!) My grandchildren, aged from 3 to 6 all love it and are now on their 4th book between them!

Many children enjoy activity books but all too often they are simple colouring-in books. This is far more challenging but never feels worthy. I have enjoyed all Herve Tulle's books.

Great book 1 May 2013

I purchased this book to include in my 3-year old daughter's easter basket, and she loves it! The book format is large, which gives her plenty of room to draw (though it almost didn't fit in the basket!), and watching her creations take shape is very rewarding. Since she can't read yet, I read her the "ingredients", and she draws her interpretation of them. The book provides an excellent lesson in following directions, one step at a time, while promoting creativity. It is so much more than a traditional coloring book and a nice change from the typical "blank sheet of paper" coloring time we usually promote in our home. I highly recommend this book and believe it would be appropriate for most children ages 3-6.

Ages 5-9 loved it! 16 Feb. 2013

I am an elementary school librarian and I used this book to complement stories in which food is an important element. My students made the pasta salad and triangle cake. I did use a document camera and a smartboard so that I could demonstrate. It is also important to draw a big circle for each student- at least for the youngest students. If you don't, some students will have plates the size of a golf ball and will not have room for the recipe instructions. They have plenty of original drawing to do - what with the place setting. For the pasta salad, I told them if they finished early to make a cupcake or ice cream sundae next to the plate for dessert. I also adapted the instructions in a few places- leaving some instructions out to make it easier for kindergarten. They were very proud of their creations!

Nice alternative to princess coloring book. Make a great gift with a pack of colored pencils or markers, maybe an apron too!
Brilliantly Simple and Creative Art Book 6 Jan. 2013
By Megan Smith - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Doodle Cook is a great alternative to your standard coloring or activity book. It is ideal for kids who can read and follow directions on their own. Set up as if it is a cookbook, each spread has a creative dish name, a blank "plate" on the right side, and instructions to fill it on the left. The instructions are things like (all from different spreads):

-First, Draw a beautiful yellow scribble in the middle of the plate.
-Inside each triangle, add some patterns and shading.
-Finally, scatter around 20 blobs.
-Color in all the shapes as quickly as possible.
-Then add large loops to the plate.
-Now draw and even BIGGER sun, with even more rays.

The pages are full of doodles and scribbles and lots of inspiration. It is a great way for kids to create art, and even if everyone follows the same instructions, each piece is unique! Fun for ages 6 to adult.

I have not used the book yet. I am looking forward to using it with prek - 1 graders and have ideas brewing on how to expand the lesson.
