Product Description

Product Description

Rhythm & Blues vocal groups have a unique place in music history and are revered by record collectors and aficionados of the music. When Fantastic Voyage released Doo Wop: The R&B Vocal Group Sound 1950-1960 in 2011, it clearly struck a chord with collectors. Collecting the 89 best-selling R&B vocal group hits from the Fifties, the compilation remains amongst the label s most popular titles. Now Doo Wop Revival continues the story into the early sixties when R&B vocal groups found themselves back in favour, and like its predecessor it is annotated by Marv Goldberg: the world s leading authority on R&B vocal groups. By the end of the 1950s, according to some music historians, Rock & Roll didn t even exist anymore; it had been absorbed into, and then became, mainstream Pop music. Teen idols were on the ascendant, and, in the opinion of many, American popular music, after the mid-1950s flash of greatness, was dying. And then, some sparks of brilliance flared up. The early 60s saw a string of hits by R&B vocal groups, most shifting down the Soul path, and the Doo Wop Revival was declared. Some of these groups had been around for years (the Platters, the Midnighters, the Coasters, the Wanderers, the Drifters), but most were new to the scene, or at least to the charts. All the selections on the 90-track 3CD Doo Wop Revival were chart hits in 1961 and 1962 (almost all on the Pop charts and most on the R&B charts as well). Some went to #1. Others barely made the top #100. But they re all worthy tunes, most of which you ll remember (and if you don t, be prepared to meet some new friends).

5.0 out of 5 stars Revival? Did it go away? 14 April 2014
Third - final? - comp in the series, here compiled by man of good taste, Laurence Cane-Honeysett and spanning 1961-62, tho some of the tracks were recorded previously, becoming hits on re-release or on another label. These were early days in my record collecting life and I'm pleased to say, perhaps smugly, that I went out and bought 45's by The Drifters, Marcels, Cleftones, Sensations, G-Clefs, Impressions ("Gypsy Woman"), Gene Chandler, all in period. Others too, but perhaps later, and not on this set, e.g., "The Twist" by Hank Ballard. (Being a snobby git, I had to have the original). I was totally unaware that I was buying what would later be generally termed 'doo wop' - just enjoyed the toons, man! As the years rolled by, knowledge increased and I became partial to the genre, especially when I was retailing. To today, when I already have the bulk of this set, sometimes several times over. Nowadays, I get sniffy about separating r&b vocal groups from doo wop groups...sad, innit? Whatever, I thoroughly enjoyed this lot, brought back many happy memories, hardly a clunker among 'em.

The cherry on the bun is the packaging and booklet, of Ace or Bear Family standard. A quad-fold digipack, with lashings of pics, ephemera, 45/LP sleeves, many in colour. Then the notes, arranged in alphabetical order, by authority Marv Goldberg. Every act gets an informed entry, including personnel - except The New Yorkers, of whom he knows nothing and is grief-stricken about! To the track listing, per each CD. Believe it or not, every one of these titles was a hit in the US, to a more or less degree, ranging from #1 to something like #96, all on Billboard's pop and r&b charts. Surprisingly, every one was a pop hit, tho not all made the r&b chart! Then there's label detail, including number.
