Product Description

Second book in the series.
Following on from Don't Look At Me In That Tone Of Voice! (Adventures of a Confused Sixties Childhood, this book continues from where the last book left of. It is now 1973 and we follow the author through the first day at high school, meeting stranger teachers than ever, eventful camping trips, teenage crushes on seventies popstars and much more. Still in the background is the same family, attention seeking mother, father still trying as hard as possible not to be noticed and terrified that people are talking about his family and a little brother of a nervous disposition. Set to the backdrop of blackouts, strikes and water shortages. A must for everyone who grew up in the seventies.

"I wanted American Tan, but my mother said English girls didn't have legs that colour, especially in Yorkshire"

"The neighbours' became accustomed to the sight of my brother being dragged past their kitchen windows every morning by his legs"

"It was years before I found out sticky back plastic was good old fashioned sellotape, we'd had loads of the stuff in the cupboard all that time,my dad "borrowed" it from work".

"I asked my mother what "training bra" meant, she said it trained your bosom. To do what? Run a marathon".

More About the Author

I was born at the very end of 1960 so I lived through all the horrific clothes and home haircuts before sampling the very interesting fashions and hairstyles of the 1970s. I learnt at a very early age that the best way to get through difficult times is to laugh about them. If you read my books you'll see why!

I have never written a book before in my life. For years my daughter kept telling me that all my stories should be in a book. I would reply that it would be a very short, boring book. Eventually, to shut her up, I sat down to write a page or two. After the first chapter I found I couldn't stop, everything came rushing back ( I think I was repressing it) and eventually I had to bring it to a close before it took over my life.
To my amazement, people found it funny and wanted more so Book 2, "Don't Tell My Mum! " was born followed by "Don't Blame Me, It's Everybody Else!" As if that wasn't enough Book 4, "Don't Know Where She Gets That From (Adventures in Parenting) is out now.

Anyway, that's me. I have been married longer than the Kray twins were incarcerated, have one grown up (sort of) daughter, two big stupid dogs and a parrot that hates me. I pass my time picking up dog poo, babysitting various little relatives and looking after my mother. Yes she's still around!! I also spend a bit of time writing now as well, thanks to you lot who seem to find my family entertaining. I thank you all for your lovely comments and reviews and even those of you who hated it, thanks for giving it a go.

If you're feeling nostalgic, give my books a look over. I would be very grateful and it might bring back a few memories as well as giving you the odd giggle.

This book is fantastic, just as good as Alex's first one and I felt as though it was my life that was being written about. Alex writes in such a unique way and captures your concentration immediately. I laughed out loud so much I thought I would burst! The similarities between my life and Alex's is amazing and I'm sure there are many others like me. Chapter 8 made me smile as I had a cowbell and wore it with pride! Thank you Alex for your witty humour - I recognise a lot of the places you went to as I went there too! I definitely recommend your book and want to thank you for letting me relive my childhood through your memories. I have just downloaded your third book and can't wait to read it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant! 17 Sep 2014

Growing up in the Seventies and I was there too, I couldn't put the book down! I was so there with the teenager crush on the pop stars, embarrassing parents and larks that just got you into trouble. Alex continues to write in her humourous, straightforward style that has you just reading on and on.....and I'm just off to the next volume!

I grew up in the fifties but lots of the incidents in this book struck a chord. Not hilariously funny but for some reason I found I couldn't put it down. Perhaps it had a lot to do with nostalgia. And don't we all think our parents are a little strange??

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth reading 2 Oct 2014

Reflects the sociology of the Seventies, we tend to forget that we have it so much better now !
Sincere feelings of young peoples and their parents, their employers, the neighbours, the socials, etc..
all was far from rosy. Many harsh things had to be stomached.
Everyone now too still has a share of scrambling for love and for a living.
