Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead aspires to be a cross between Home Alone and Risky Business, with Christina Applegate as an inadvertent scam artist who gets in over her head and somehow pulls it off. When her mother goes to Australia for two months, Sue Ellen (Applegate) thinks she's going to be in charge--until an elderly tyrant of a babysitter arrives. But on the very first night the old lady has a heart attack and keels over. Sue Ellen and her siblings leave the body at a mortuary, only to discover afterward that all the money their mother had left for the summer was in the babysitter's clothes. So Sue Ellen has to get a job. Thanks to a trumped-up resume, she ends up as an executive assistant at a clothing manufacturer. For a while she keeps her head above water by skilfully exploiting a friendly coworker, but her brothers and sisters are running amok at home and a venomous receptionist has it in for her at work. The role-reversal humour of Sue Ellen having to mother her siblings is unsurprising, but Applegate is unexpectedly appealing; her scenes with Josh Charles have a sweet chemistry. Joanna Cassidy plays Sue Ellen's boss and a young David Duchovny is a weaselly clerk. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com

Product Description

Mrs Crandell goes on a two-month summer trip to Australia, leaving her five children with an elderly babysitter - who is soon found dead. The Crandell children (aged 6 to 17) are soon running riot while the eldest (Christina Applegate) gets a job with a fashion firm, thanks to a few white lies on her CV, and tries to hold the family together until Mom comes home.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm right on top of that, Rose! 29 Aug 2009
Format:DVD
I love this movie. There, I said it.

I first saw this at a friend's house when I was about 12, and I instantly fell in love with it - Sue Ellen's clothes, Melissa's ballsy attitude, Kenny and his complete turnaround, Brian, the clown dog driver...it was fantastic.
Sue Ellen Krandall (Christina Applegate) is looking forward to spending a Mom-free summer at the beach when her mother announces that she's going to Australia for a long vacation. Right before her Mom leaves, Sue-Ellen's plans come crashing down around her with the arrival of Mrs. Sterac, the ancient, Uber-strict babysitter. Things aren't looking good----until the babysitter dies, taking with her the money Mrs. Krandall left for the upkeep of the house.
Sue-Ellen quickly realises that in order to take care of herself and her siblings (stoner Kenny, love-sick Zack, mischevious Walter, and tomboy Melissa), she has to get a job, and as a 17-year old with no qualifications, what can she do? Fake it, that's what. She blags her way into a wonderful job at a clothing company, and quickly finds her feet as a personal assistant.
The novelty of being a "working woman" soon wears off as Sue Ellen realises that it's not easy being a career woman and a "Mom" at the same time.

I recently bought this DVD and I was a little dubious about watching it at the age of 26 - would it be as good as I remembered?
I wasn't disappointed. It's one of the few early 90's movies that has stood the test of time- the gags are as funny now as they were back then, Christina Applegate's Sue Ellen Krandall is still one of the most likeable leads in a family movie EVER, and the supporting cast of brothers and sisters are just as funny.

If you haven't seen it, buy it now. It's a little gem.

5.0 out of 5 stars cheesy classic 20 Dec 2002
By A Customer
Format:DVD
Y'know those films that you watched as kid, back in the days when all you had to worry about was where your next sugar fix was coming from? Then you watch them again years later (when you should be doing something really important) and it's just how you remembered it...

It's one of those films from the 80's early 90's that were just straight down the line fun. Familiy of kids having to fend for themselves after their babysitter dies. There's no big heartfelt moral, no over use of crude jokes and inuendo that's so often seen in todays films, just good old fashioned feel good fun.

Whack in the DVD player sit back and enjoy a carefree couple of hours :)

5.0 out of 5 stars a classic 90's comedy 12 Jun 2005
Format:DVD
this is a great movie, one of my faves. its a real cool family movie with laughs aplenty. i recommend everyone should purchase this, especially at this bargain price. the only downfall is that cinema club have done a very poor job of the dvd conversion, the picture is very fuzzy. otherwise a worthy purchase.
