Having lived in France for many years, this sweet film "La Grande Vadrouille" became one of my firm favourites. Louis de Funes and Bourvil are two brilliant French actors and a very funny double act. The film takes place during the Second World War, when a Royal Air Force plane is shot down over Paris, leaving its three British pilots stranded in different locations, but with an agreement to meet at the Turkish bath and plan their escape to the Free French Zone. With the more or less involuntary help from the french "odd" couple, we then follow their hilarious journey through occupied France. A nice touch is that the different nationalities are played by English, French and German actors in their respective languages.
For years I had been looking for a replacement for a worn French VHS copy (only visible in black and white), and was delighted when it finally became available on DVD from Amazon.
The DVD is of excellent quality (and in colour again!), only downside is that if you don't speak french, the subtitles are rudimentary.
The film may sound dated, but it is sweet and SO SO funny, and gives a realistic image of the interaction between different nationalities.
I can but highly recommend this little gem!
