John is an unlikely hero: cynical, resigned, misunderstood, a target of physical abuse and contempt by his mother's boyfriend. But he has courage and imagination and loyal friends who do try to understand and to help him. The book is very moving and very funny in equal measure, a masterpiece of teenage fiction for adults and children alike. My 13 year old daughter read it, laughing out loud and quoting passages she just had to share. When I read it, I went straight back to the beginning and started again, and I still dip into it to re-read favourite scenes, like the eight-page description of John in class trying to avoid answering an algebra question.
You just have to read this book.
