I have to say that I'm a great fan of Tina Arena. This album is delivered with real conviction and soul and show-cases a remarkably individual voice. The first track is "Chains" and it captures the nightmare of a relationship gone badly wrong. Also there is "Show me heaven" more widely known by Maria McKee which is the perfect vehicle for Tina's unique style. This isn't simply simpering girlie rock; the tunes are produced with power and belief, are often slow but impeccably recorded with a Carpenteresque clarity. There is perfection here of diction and substance, also of subject matter, of love, loss and yearning. I love this album and reccomend it to those of you who like a traditional vocal delivered within a perfectly produced package.

Like another reviewer, I disagree with Andres MaGuire's view of this album, although feel he is entitled to his opinion, like the rest of us. However, he does have a point about Tina Arena being a Mariah Carey wannabe. The difference is that Miss Arena (her real name!) has a far, far superior voice to the screeching tones of Miss Carey.

I first heard Tina Arena when she appeared on a lunchtime TV show and performed "Sorrento Moon" - I liked her voice very much and this prompted me to buy her album which is very good.

The aforementioned track is my favourite - catchy and spritely, with an attractive melody and chorus - a fabulous song. As for other stand-out tracks, they include her bit UK hit "Chains", "Heaven Help My Heart" and "Wasn't It Good?", power ballads which are sung strongly, with excellent orchestration and nicely arranged. These are all on the first half of the album and, although the second half of the album is still pretty good, it is not on the same level.

This seems to map out the Tina Arena recording career since then - in my opinion, not being able to live up to the earlier promise. Not to put too fine a point on it, she just became a power ballad singer and screecher, a la Miss Carey and where is she now??? The follow-up "In Deep" stank and reminded me too much of the tripe which Celine Dion and Mariah Carey dish out, although Tina's voice is much better than either of those two cringer-singers. However, the songs since have been dreadful.

So, in conclusion, I hope she comes back with an album more similar to this but, at the moment, if you want to listen to Tina Arena's great voice, this is the album to buy - you can ignore the rest.

This is very good.

This album is tina arena's powerful kick start that follows an amzing career of GRADE A albums. Since hearing the amazing chart topping hit CHAINS, I became a completely hooked fan of Tina Arena, and just went overboard since then, buying EVERYTHING she has ever done and keeping up to date with what is going on in her career. This album gives you a taster of what Tina arena is capable of vocally, especially with her powerful soaring voice on SHOW ME HEAVEN where she reaches notes that the gods can hear!!!! There is something for everyone on this album, slow songs such a s WASN'T IT GOOD that will bring a tear to you eye, to more chilled out songs such as MESSAGE and LOVE IS THE ANSWER, then of course SORRENTO MOON (I REMEMBER) will have you dancing around the room flamenco style! A great album worth buying, and like with all tina's albums, she gives you your money's worth and more....

This is an excellent album with the first five tracks, including "Chains" and "Sorrento Moons" being a very strong set, the latter track being my favourite as it moves along very nicely and shows off her voice to great effect. The second part of the album is good, if not as high quality as before.

However, after this album, she just became a power ballad singer and screecher, a la Miss Carey and where is she now??? Not sure, but I hope she comes back with an album more similar to this - she has a great voice.

This is very good.

For anyone who appreciates the intrinsic quality of any artist's music instead of resorting to the critical relativism of Andrew McGuire this CD offers the lister some deliteful music from a budding young artist. I disagree with the Andrew McGuire's comparison of Tina Arena's music with other artists. Is art a competition?

I had heard Tina's big hit song years ago "Chains" and thought like most other people that when I didn't hear any more of her on the radio that she was a one hit wonder. This is what is wrong with the radio stations today when someone as talented as Tina can be so unfairly ignored. I was in a record store when I heard "Chains" being played on a compilation album and I said hey this lady has a great voice so check out her music. I bought "Dont Ask" as my first Tina Arena album and the addiction started. This is a brilliant album with absolutely no throw away tracks, if you liked the song "Chains" you will like the rest of the album. Some of the tracks even surpass that song which really says it all about the quality of the music on this album. If you want to try out Tina's sound to get a feel for her voice and style of music then this is a great album to start with, she is truly one of the finest female singers I heard. Check it out for yourself, I doubt you will be disappointed with this album.
