Review

"This is a truly addictive and gripping novel with huge appeal to teenage girls." -- Carousel No. 43 November 2009

"Not another predictable love story ... pinpoints the dangers of networking sites which can tempt people to divulge more personal information than is wise or safe. The characters are believable and the narrative is pacy without being patronizing. A good read which I would have no hesitation in recommending to any teenager who wants something a bit different." -- School Librarian 57-3 Autumn 2009

" ... completely riveting from start to finish. Lily is a lively and fun character and there was plenty of humour in this book, alongside the slightly darker storyline ... I also loved the parts where Lily tried desperately to fit in with football fan Alex. On the surface it's a story about secrets, trust and pretence, but it also takes a good look at identity: how we see ourselves, the way someone's opinion of us can change our behaviour, and whether it makes sense to look for perfection in other people. Thoroughly recommended!" -- Chicklish, 19 March 2009

"A really good read ... funny, yet realistic and had a good moral. I felt that any girl could find herself in Lily's position. The ending isn't sugary happy, but it is just and fits the story. A stark warning to nosey girls!" --City of Edinburgh Teen Titles Book Review Magazine, Spring 2009

Product Description

If you could, should you?

Lily believes her boyfriend Jack is perfect, but wonders why he won't
talk about his past. Wouldn't it be fantastic, she thinks, if she could talk
to his ex and fill in all the gaps? Thanks to the internet, Lily devises a way to do just that. But what begins as a bit of fun has unexpected
- and disturbing - consequences ...

Don't Ask 25 Mar 2009
Format:Paperback
Lily's boyfriend Jack is perfect in every way - except that he won't talk about his past. Lily grows increasingly frustrated by his silence and desperate for answers. When she thinks of a plan to satisfy her curiosity about Jack through a social networking site, she decides to go ahead with it, even if it means telling a few harmless lies. But the lies breed more lies and soon Lily is in deep, and dragging innocent people with her. What's more, she starts to find out things that she might have been better off not knowing...

I found this book completely riveting from start to finish. Lily is a lively and fun character and there was plenty of humour in this book, alongside the slightly darker storyline. Lily's best friend Katie was also great (and I loved the random online friend Igor, who popped up now and then!). I also loved the parts where Lily tried desperately to fit in with football fan Alex. On the surface it's a story about secrets, trust and pretence, but it also takes a good look at identity: how we see ourselves, the way that someone's opinion of us can change our behaviour, and whether it makes sense to look for perfection in other people. Thoroughly recommended!

A Kid's Review
Format:Paperback
Don't Ask is about a girl called Lily who wants to find out more about her boyfriend's past. She has tried to ask him but he always says that he 'doesn't want to talk about it' or changes the subject. Lily sets up a fake identity on a networking site, so she can get in contact with her boyfriend's ex-girlfriend. Using a fake name, Laura Thompson, Lily invents a whole new life for herself, and uncovers some truths that might've been better to leave in the past...
I have previously read another of Hilary Freeman's books ,Lifted, and I loved it, so I brought this one. I didn't know how this book could live up to the same standard as Lifted, but I'm very glad to say it did! I can't wait to read her other book (Loving Danny) and for her new book to come out soon (The Celeb Next Door). I definitely recommend her books to all teenage girls (12+). A fab read from a great writer!

I can't write what I really want to without including spoilers! So here goes...
You shouldn't sympathise with Lily, because she's doing wrong, but the author gets so in her head that you find yourself cheering her on! I think it works because all of us, teenagers or not, have done something stupid to impress a boy at some stage or another, and it's only by luck that we don't all end up in this kind of predicament. It's funny as well as moving, with some great observations on teenage life.
