This is not a compilation CD, it's pure ambience brilliance!, 28 Feb 2004
This review is from: Donnie Darko [Film Score] (Audio CD)
First of all, as the title of this review says, this is not a collection of all the great classic 80's tunes that helped make Donnie Darko the film it is...It's better than that. When I first put it in the CD player, I was sceptical, I thought it was another disappointing spin off from a great film, but I was very very wrong. Only after really listening to the ambience that Michael Andrews brought to this film do you realise that Donnie Darko was taken from obscure retro script to masterpiece by the score. The only minor gripe with this cd is that Mad World is remixed/repeated three times at the end which, although it is undoubtedly a beautiful cover, is a bit much even for the most hardened Gary Jules fan.
If you want the 80's, get one of those compilation albums that line the bargain bins, but if you want to experience the film with your eyes closed, please buy this, and be blown away.

After reading the poor review, thought I had to have a say. This album is a Score - not a Soundtrack. It captures the mood of the film perfectly and is topped off by the amazing version of Tears for Fears' Mad World. Buy it - simple as that.

Theatrical Score, not a soundtrack., 26 Dec 2003
With the exception of Mad World, this album contains only the score from the film Donnie Darko. It does not include the great 80's tunes within the film. The score captures the haunting and mysterious essence of the film but does not make for great listening once detached from the picture in the way a score such as Gladiator does.
