Product Description

DONNA SUMMER gained prominence during the 1970s disco era, propelled by her incessant and creative driving force behind the genre’s global popularity, rightly earning the title “Queen Of Disco” and becoming one of the most successful recording artists of the entire decade. Donna was the first Artist to have three consecutive Double-Albums reach No. 1 on the US Billboard charts and also became the first artist to achieve four No. 1 singles in a thirteen month period. Donna’s catalogue has sold more than 130 Million units worldwide and this re-issue campaign of seven of her later albums, prove that she was able to accommodate new musical and production styles as the decade progressed. Donna Summer became the first Artist signed to the new Geffen Records label in 1980 and released her first album – ‘THE WANDERER’ - for the label in the same year. The second album released for the label was the 1982 classic ‘DONNA SUMMER’, which saw her enter new territory, with production duties taken over by Quincy Jones. This proved to be a masterstroke of the highest degree on David Geffen’s behalf, as the next album that Quincy produced was Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’. The album’s r&b/pop dynamic featured a ‘Who’s Who’ of the genre, which can be seen from reading through the album credits, from the album’s lead single ‘Love Is In Control (Finger On The Trigger)’, to the All Star Chorus on the Jon & Vangelis written ‘State Of Independence’, the James Ingram vocal harmonies on ‘Mystery Of Love’, the Bruce Springsteen-penned and performed ‘Protection’ and ‘(If It) Hurts Just A Little’ featuring Shalamar’s Howard Hewett, with a synth-vocal performance that he repeated on Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ on (‘PYT’), the track being heavily sampled in 1999 by Cassius in ‘Cassius 1999’. This re-mastered re-issue, is packaged in a sumptuous case-bound book, containing the original full album credits and acknowledgements, newly authored liner notes by noted US writer Christian John Wikane, with brand new interviews with Bruce Sudano, James Ingram, Greg Phillinganes, Brenda Russell and Richard Page, as well as the lyrics, as included in the original LP and features the original studio album with non-album ‘B’ side and extra singles mixes.

I adore this fresh and rather beautiful album.
The Billy Strayhorn 'lush life' versioned here by ms summer, is just beautiful and aqua blue in the music notes, I take her version for what it is, and it shines indeed, donna lifts this song up to a true sparkle.
'Mystery of love' proves that soulfull pop tracks can be Polished yet moving and thoughtful.
Just a great album and I'm delighted its on release once again.

I become concerned when record companies release "deluxe expanded versions" of albums. My concern here is that there is very little to choose apart from remixes and instrumentals of the singles - disappointing to say the least.

'Love Is In Control' was a super single running at around 4 mins, with an album version slightly longer. The 12" remix was released at the same time as the 7" in 1982 and is ok but rather repetitive than a true remix. 'State of Independence' features Vangelis of course but the album version is the superior version by far. This was a competent album at the time but not a classic. Donna Summer left her best songs of the time for the classic 'She Works Hard For The Money' which followed a year later in 1983.

Sadly it is easy when someone passes on, to overstate their work and I feel this album fits that category - so I am not going there with 5 stars. It is 3 stars for the sheer effort of her fabulous timeless voice and for her treatment of the Vangelis masterpiece. Would have liked to hear some demos from the Geffen vaults - they do exist...

In the early 1980's seeking to broaden her appeal beyond the disco genre Donna Summer signed to the new record label established by David Geffen. This album was her second release for the label it paired her with the producer Quincy Jones who was entering a golden period as a producer having produced 'Off The Wall' for Michael Jackson and he was about to produce 'Thriller' Donna Summer was made between these two albums and bears all the hallmarks of a Quincy Jones production with plenty of horns and percussion provided by a crack team of musicians and singers including Greg Phillinganes, James Ingram, Jeff Pocaro, Ernie Watts and Bruce Springsteen. Donna Summer reveals herself as a great pop soul singer on tracks such as 'Love Is In Control' , 'The Woman In Me' and 'The Mystery Of Love'. She also branches out into pop/rock with the Springsteen track 'Protection' and also a cover of the Vangelis track 'The State Of Independence' backed by an all star choir. There is only one track that i don't think quite works and that is a version of the Duke Ellington/Billy Strayhorn track 'Lush Life' she was never really a jazz singer. This reissue of this album contains extra tracks but apart from one track these amount to 3 alternate [and unnecessary] versions of State Of Independence and Love Is In Control however it does have some interesting liner notes. So to sum up this is great pop soul album made by two artists [Summer and Jones] at the peak of their powers.
