Originally I purchased the Callas/Di Stefano/Gobbi LP back in the early 70's. I thought Callas had the necessary to render a great performance here, but never entirely convinced. I have never been fully taken by the voice of Sutherland, I have found her diction at time lacking and sounding muffled and even at times rather deeper than I like. I know she started as a mezzo, so maybe this was it,
Over the last 20 years I have been replacing my LP collection, but I held back on replacing Lucia. The problem with Lucia is that there are more than adequate singers to sing the male parts, but the part of Lucia never seems to hit the mark.
I first bought the Andrea Rost version, which I like a lot. However I found that Rost did not have the lilting voice required, the Coloratura was also lacking. This is a Bel Canto opera and requires some beauty in the singing.
I next bought the Studer version. She has a powerful voice, and I thought maybe too powerful; but she does a great rendition of Lucia, but does not convey that vulnerability.
I then eventually took the plunge and purchased this version back in 2008. Although as already stated I was concerned over diction etc, I found that this is truly a remarkable recording. There is no expense spared on the use of 3 CD's, and the ornamentation is not excessive. I must admit I like the ornamentation that she gives it, and I understand that this may not have been what Donizetti tryly intended - but what the heck. We are talking Bel Canto here, and this is truly Bel Canto at its best. This opera isn't just the Mad Scene, and Sutherland is truly at her best here. My years of wariness was unduly not warranted.
The other singers are truly magnificent, though Pavarotti is not a Bel Canto singer in my opinion, he does sing this well.

This magnificent recording was made by Decca in the summer of 1971 in virtually the same session as the "Rigoletto" with the same conductor, principal cast members and sound engineer and in the same venue, so artistically and sonically it is superb. The only difference is that the the orchestra and chorus of the Royal Opera are employed rather than the LSO and the Ambrosians, which entails no loss, just a maintenance of high quality.

I am bewildered by carpers who complain about the lack of atmosphere, Sutherland's diction and Pavarotti sounding too little like Edgardo and too much like himself. Their complaints are, as far as I'm concerned, either highly subjective or illusory; this recording makes others look under-powered and is so much better than either Sutherland's first version under Pritchard ten years before or Bonynge's forgettable remake twenty years later. She might sound rather more mature - she was only 44 - but technically she is absolutely extraordinary, her voice huge, agile and powerful up to a top E. Pavarotti is very involved - I hear no coasting - and produces singing to set alongside his Duke of Mantua. I remember being thrilled by Milnes' opening two arias the first time I played the LPs and in many ways this recording finds him in the best voice I have ever heard, complete with snarl and ringing top G. Ghiaurov is in smoothest chocolate voice, a perfect foil to the sibling hysteria displayed by Enrico and Lucia. Ryland Davies and Sutherland's most frequent mezzo partner, Huguette Tourangeau, complete a very strong cast.

Decca has now transferred this 140 minutes of music from an unnecessarily extravagant three discs to two but this is a complete, uncut version.

This without doubt is a true classic of the type, not only because of the superb singing of Dame Joan Sutherland in the title role, but also with a superb line up behind her. Sherrill Milnes is peerless as Enrico, Nicolai Ghiaurov is at his best as Raimondo and there is even Huguette Tourangeau in the smaller role of Alisa. Last but not least the set is completed with Luciano Pavarotti as Lucia's fiance Edgardo. What a cast!

What a production! Richard Bonynge, naturally directs the Covent Garden forces. Christopher Raeburn produces another fantastic set for Decca.

For all the above reasons, this set has to be the Lucia to go for.

The ultimate recording of this opera.
The singers are the best one can imagine in these parts. Sutherland is doing Lucia with total ease and giving credibility to this incredible role.
Pavarotti is in very good shape and sings Donizetti with perfect sense for the style. Milnes and Ghiaurov are worth the whole recording, just by themselves.
