This recording is remarkable. Pavarotti sings with unbound beauty and Sutherland is remarkable as Marie. Some of the Pavarotti/Sutherland sets (recorded over a long period between the mid 1960's into the mid-late 1980's) have Sutherland sounding a little old for her parts, but with this set both the singers are in their complete prime. Sutherland was only 41 when this recording was made in 1968 and Pavarotti was very young at 32. Both performers give their all and this makes for some brilliant moments, not least Pavarotti's "Ah! mes amis". The supporting cast is excellent, especially Spiro Malas, he is wickedly good as Sulpice with a magnificent voice.
The Orchestra is warm sounding and the conducting well paced. The sound is very good considering its age, the Decca engineering means there is very little distortion and literally no background noise.
Considering the amount of enjoyment you get from this recording the price is very fair, it is well presented also, it would be a nice gift for any Bel Canto lover.
All in all this is an excellent set.

Amazing recording of amazing performances. Sutherland is unbelievable. Her singing is intensely brilliant and glorious - technically spectacular - unbelievable, as well as being full of real emotion. Pavarotti's voice is really splendid, young, clear and bell-like, while at the same time warm and rich, with those famous repeated and spectacular high C's at the end of Act I. This is one of the greatest opera recordings of all times. Amazing, absolutely fantastic performance by Sutherland. Essential.

A wonderful period piece of almost unrivalled singing from two of the best at the peak of their performance, ably supported by the lesser characters and genuine humour from the classic speaking cameo of the Duchesse de Krakenthorp. The recording is also something of a tribute to an all but vanished style of bel canto performance; those lucky enough to see Dessay and Florez at Covent Garden last year (televised this Christmas) will realise how things have changed. However, until such stunning performers choose to perform on disc, "La Stupenda" and "Big Lucy" remain the only option. In any event, as a monument to it's style and artists it is indispensable.

Amazing
I think someone commented that one note in the tenor aria distorted slightly. This is so minor and should not detract from an otherwise fantastic recording.

Very disappointed
With no information I had hoped that all the Tonio songs were by Pavarotti, only 'Ah mes Amis' was by Pavarotti (I felt this was not his best recording of this song). Read more

Excellent
This is a superb performance. The recording, however, shows its age in places: for example, there is some distortion on the longest of the famous high Cs of Pavarotti. Read more
