Format:Audio CD
Although a late recording for Sutherland, her assumption of the role of the much put-upon Anna is done with enormous power and moving eloquence. The voice may have lost some of the ethereal bloom of earlier days and the coloratura may be less fleet than previously, but what she gains is a wonderfully emotional warmth - and the sound is still huge and deeply moving. As always, top notes ring true and full, right up the range, and the bottom of her sublime instrument throbs with a burnished beauty. Bonynge does rather rattle through the score, but for elegance and phrasing he still shows how it should be done. It's scandalous that he never came back to Covent Garden or the Met after his wife's retirement: presumably was never asked? We need great advocates of the bel canto style and he is one of the best. Other roles are taken with satisfying consistency, Ramey being particularly exciting as he relishes Henry's bombastic music. All in all, this is a wonderful set and the sound comes out of Decca's top drawer.

I have always been Sutherland fan. Ever since I saw her in 5 of 6 memorable performances of Lucrezia Borgia in Rome. Agreed, by then her glorious top Eb had gone but the 'personaggio' was there and, to these days, I still consider Lucrezia as one of her more accomplished interpretations. So, I wonder, why did Sutherland embark on such a challenge - in fact, the greatest of her career, to quote her own words? Was this really necessary? It is commonly agreed that Dame Joan lacked the 'corda drammatica' and Bolena is more dramatic a character than many other heroines Sutherland successfully portrayed. To tackle it at all leaves me a bit puzzled. That she did so when she was over the hill leaves me completely astonished. She was obviously an intelligent artist and she should have known better. The whole project is ill conceived and the result is pathetic. This recording does not add anything to Sutherland's career as one of the most outstanding sopranos ever. What a pity...

Poor old Sutherland was way past her sell by date for a weighty singing role like this. Her top notes are dry and ragged. She should have recorded this in the early 70's not in the late 80's. Beverley Sills is a much safer bet for Anna Bolena.
