Gruberova proves worthy of the crown,

This review is from: Donizetti: Anna Bolena (Audio CD)
This opera was Donizetti's first major success and his own personal style had developed away from that of Rossini. It deals with the story of the last weeks of the reign of Anne Boleyn as she is the victim of Henry VIII's machinations to clear the marital bed in favour of Jane Seymour - and, as often occurs in opera, much of the story has no basis in actual historical event. Despite this it is an impressive work and contains some beautiful music. Edita Gruberova rises to the challenging music of Anna herself with only a few moments of unsteadyness and a couple of ringing top e-flats. She characterises the part well and suceeds in making us pity the plight of the poor queen. Her mad scene is movingly simple and her condemnation of the guilty couple in the final aria is very impressive. Her voice may not be large enough however for some who have heard Callas, Sutherland or Souliotis in the role. Jose Bros as the love interest Lord Percy soars with ease into the upper register and the part of Enrico (Henry VIII) is sung menacingly by the dark-toned bass Palatchi. Dolores Ziegler as Giovanna (Jane) is not always ideally sweet-toned and the sound tends to grate above the stave but she is nonetheless very dramatic and the voice is rich when not pressured. The chorus makes minimal contribution but are generally good and Boncompagni keeps the performance going with some lovely strings in the final scene. This was recorded at a series of live performances but the sound quality is good with audience noise only at the very end. Highly recommended to all lovers of beautiful music and especially bel canto opera fans.
