Product Description

Product Description

Sean Beattie has brought together nearly 200 pictures from the last 150 years, many never published before, to create a photographic portrait of the county of Donegal. From the streets of Donegal town itself to the county's beautiful islands, from schools to farms, from golf courses to bustling markets, from holidays on the beach to poignant images of emigrants aboard ship waiting to leave Ireland for a 'new life', this collection of pictures reveals all aspects of Donegal's life over the last century and a half. It includes images of Eamonn de Valera at Glencolmcille, a rare stereoscopic photograph of the children at Terryone National School in Inishowen and many other fascinating slices of the county's life.

About the Author

Sean Beattie's family has been in Donegal since the seventeenth century. He is a leading member of the Donegal Historical Society. He grew up in Donegal and went to St Columb's College, Derry, with singer/producer Phil Coulter and Seamus Heaney. He has been a teacher and guidance councellor for many years and is involved in a wide range of local history projects in both the Republic and Ulster.

As I am from Donegal, I must say I have enjoyed this book, recognising towns and villages as they were in the past.
It sits on my coffee table and visitors enjoy the picks and it is a good conversation piece.
Thanks

I've bought thjis book for my father, a Donegal man through and through! Yet I spent many of my childhood years in this area on holidays and was very pleasantly surprised at how the photos whisked me back to a bygone era. An excellent pictorial history of life as it once was.
