Product Description

The dominance of the graffiti aesthetic in contemporary culture is undeniable. But how did an art form spawned in the train yards of 1970s New York achieve the dominance it now enjoys in rap videos, TV commercials, fashion, and print ads around the world? There are many answers to the question, but one factor is indisputable: DONDI WHITE. Coming of age in hardscrabble East New York in the early 1970s, Dondi began the process of introducing a whole new artistic dialect into the cacophony of the American art scene. His work on subway trains remain classic benchmarks throughout the worldwide graffiti community today. In the 80s, Dondi's contributions were recognised by the art world at large. His death in the autumn of 1998 was mourned in graffiti and high art communities alike. Dondi's work maintains a rabid, worldwide following, and here for the first time, his full story is told. DONDI will also feature early sketches, rare paintings, and many images of Dondi's work on the subway trains of New York that have never been viewed before - anywhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book on a single graffiti writer, so far!, 11 Mar 2002
This review is from: Dondi White; Style Master General. (Hardcover)
A look at the art of the graffiti legend, Dondi. It was written by his personal friend (another legend) Zephyr and his brother, so it is as precise as possible. The book follows Dondi's life from his childhood in East New York through his years as New York's leading subway painter and his career as a fine artist. It's full of a few hundred colour photographs and you always notice something different in this book each time you open it. It is a revolution for documented grafiti with a balanced combination of graffiti, fine art, biographical writing and statements from many who knew him. This book is a fitting tribute to the late Dondi White, a beloved and highly influential artist.

5.0 out of 5 stars CHECK IT OUT!!!, 8 Dec 2001
By Patti Astor - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Dondi White; Style Master General. (Hardcover)
This book is an incredible get down into the heart of the graffiti art scene. Insider or not, the fabulous photos of Dondi's art will make you want to pick up some cans and head out to the yards. It is also a touching history of two very close friends and the dedication that art inspires. I am proud to have shown them both at my gallery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Graffiti Greatness, 13 Nov 2001
By submachine - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Dondi White; Style Master General. (Hardcover)
"Dondi White Style Master General" is the ultimate collection of artwork by the legendary Dondi. And who better to author/archive this than fellow bomber and friend, Zephyr?

Everything from Dondi's sketchbooks and subway pieces to gallery murals is collected here. It belongs right up there with Subway Art, the first book to document the aerosol art of Dondi.

Read "Dondi White Style Master General", learn the history of a true graffiti pioneer.

5.0 out of 5 stars ONCE UPON A TIME IN BROOKLYN..., 15 Sep 2003
By James Rodriguez "Koe Rodriguez" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Dondi White; Style Master General. (Hardcover)
In a nutshell, "Dondi White Style Master General", is an excellent retrospective on the life of the great Dondi White. Bar-none, one of the illest artist to wield a can of spray paint; Dondi's work was highly influential and propelled him to great heights. From his stomping grounds in East NY, Brooklyn to the Boogie-Down Bronx, Dondi's subway pieces were some of NY's most exciting and arguably the best. One of a handful of early graffiti artists to successfully make the transition from subway to gallery, Dondi's unique pieces were well received at home and abroad. Longtime friend Zephyr and (Dondi's) brother Mike White do a fantastic job of covering Dondi's incredible body of work. The reader is given great insight into the life n' times of an extremely humble and incredibly gifted man. Dondi's untimely and mysterious demise left the graff community and artworld deeply saddened, but his work and spirit will forever live on. --James "Koe" Rodriguez
