For years I've had 'The Storm', a record doubtlessly strongly dividing opinion in the world of folk lovers - and often the battle has raged inside me. As good as the music is, and how excellent the players involved may be, the music lacks an emotional core, a factor strengthened by the slick production values - although I absolutely adore the second half of 'The Storm' from 'Finore' on.

Moving Hearts albums were always hard to come by and I thought I might give the Hearts' earlier work a try by buying this 'Definitive' edition, hoping that Christy Moore's voice would be able to bring some well-needed warmth.

The songs graced by Christy's voice are indeed the highlights on this compilation cd for me, but even he cannot really save the day due to the same lamentable production slickness. And odd choices were made - why was this cd not filled up to the brim? As it has a length of about 64 minutes Donal Lunny could easily have added some more songs. And why 'The lark' as the choice cut from 'The Storm'? It is way overstaying its welcome, taking up a massive 13 minutes - why not 'Finore' and 'May morning dew' instead?

I've been a Planxty/Christy/Andy Irvine/Bothy Band fan for many years, and I admire the work of 'quiet man' Donal Lunny who has produced and supported so many acts, but this compilation will probably end up somewhere at the bottom of my stack of cd's.

Good compilation with great sound and 2 previously unreleased (and otherwise unavailable) tracks. 12 Nov. 2011

As always, one can quibble with the track selection (I myself would have included 'Remember the Brave Ones' and 'What Will You Do About Me' from "Dark End Of The Street"; and the studio versions of 'Downtown' and 'All I Remember' rather than the live ones); but what this compilation has going for it is excellent sound and two previously unreleased tracks: 'The Girl in the Big House, An Phis Fhliuch' and 'Ballinspittle Boogie'. It's not clear if these tracks are actual out-takes from the "The Storm" sessions, but they were recorded the same year by the same lineup, and fit right in with the rest of the album. The disc has most of the "essential" tracks, including their definitive version of Jim Page's 'Hiroshima Nagasaki Russian Roulette'. If you love "The Storm", you want this album. If you've never heard Moving Hearts before, you MUST have this album.
