"ascends above most current translations" - Kirkus Indie Reviews

This is the story that a Nobel Prize Committee survey of one hundred of the world's best writers named "the greatest book of all time." DON QUIXOTE is the biggest-selling book of fiction ever written. It has sold more than 500 million copies.

"There is nothing more profound or powerful than this piece of fiction. It is still the finest and greatest expression of human thought, the most bitter irony that a man is capable of uttering." - Fyodor Dostoyevsky

"DON QUIXOTE looms so wonderfully above the skyline of literature, a gaunt giant on a lean nag, that the book lives and will live through its sheer vitality." - Vladimir Nabokov

"The highest creation of genius has been achieved by Shakespeare and Cervantes, almost alone." - Samuel Taylor Coleridge

"What a monument is this book. How its creative genius, critical, free and human, soars above its age." - Thomas Mann

5.0 out of 5 stars Love the classics 9 Sep 2012

I vaguely remembered Don Quixote as being a children's story about a madman and some windmills and decided to read the entire book to see what it was actually about. And loved it. The Don's madness takes him on an (in his eyes) epic journey that invariably ends in great disaster for himself and those close to him. Nothing can convince him he is ever in the wrong or utterly deluded though, something that Cervantes narrates in a masterful manner and the supporting characters reinforce in various ways, to make this an hilarious tale of (perceived) heroics and the twists and turns of the human mind.

Cervantes was obviously a masterful storyteller in his time and the 400 years that have since passed have not at all rendered this work archaic. There are many layers to this story, some of which the contemporary reader might miss out on due to the fact it was written in the 17th century. This has no detrimental effect on the book though, even in its simplest form this is a formidable and hugely enjoyable read for both young and old.

Special praise to the translator.

A wonderful book so different from modern fiction. Sometimes hard to know where it is going. Some great parallels with life today with echos from the past.
